just watched the 2004 movie and it made me appreciate Neil Patrick Harris's performance even more!

I think he is amazing in this. I mean, obviously Carrey is a master, but he simply didn't have as much to do with the role. I also didn't get why he was speaking normally in the character of Stefano.

I also think the black Mr. Poe has a lot more character to him - the one in the movie was almost exactly like Harry Potter's uncle.

And I just felt sorry for the supporting cast (like Count Olaf's troupe) who didn't even have any lines, especially since all the actors are recognizable. Also a mystery to me why Dustin Hoffman agreed to be in the movie for like 45 seconds of screen time. Even Cedric the Entertainer got more!

Oh, and Jude Law never once even showed his face?

And story-wise, a short movie like that can't possibly do any justice to a long book series.

I like the cinematography, sets, and overall vibe of the movie better. But I like that the show is more faithful to the books and is a complete adaptation.

I think the movie had better actors for Olaf, Klaus, Mr. Poe, Monty, and Josephine. But I prefer the TV versions of Lemony and Violet. I also like that the henchmen got more lines and screen time in the TV show.
