Why does Bumblebee look so different in this iteration

Maybe I've just seen too many Transformers movies by now, but in the trailer Bumblebee looks like a totally different Transformer now. Was this intentional?

This movie may end up being good, but the trailer I just saw has me wondering...

He looks like Herbie the Love Bug

In a word, they wanted Bumblebee to resemble his Gen1 design closer. Plus, with this film they intended to make something different and that set itself apart from Bay’s franchise (they successfully did). It wouldn’t had made sense to keep Bumblebee looking the way he did in the previous movies.

But besides staying truer to the classic design, Bumblebee’s new look makes him far more expressive than ever before. Can’t see his character being able to express the same range of emotions and basically look as genuine if they had kept his familiar big screen look.

And yes, he looks so much better now. His bond with Steinfeld’s character is wonderful.

And there you have the reason I asked...I can relate to changing the tone of the storyline, Bay had the whole premise heading into the trash can with the dumb and choppy plots; I think everyone can agree with that!

And I understand this is supposed to be a prequel, so that doesn't bother me at all...what does bother me however, is the fresh and new 'out of the box' look now; for two reasons: First, the summaries I've seena suggest that Bumblebee is hiding at first, because he's 'battlescarred', like from recent battles; but looks like he just came out of a paintshop...

Secondly, the 'look' gave me the nasty impression that they chose to make him a 'toy looking for a movie', instead of the movie looking to sell toys angle...It's just the feeling I get when looking at the trailers. I do hope the new direction takes off well, as I was disgusted with the last three...

Finally, I'm kinda lost with the 'Gen1' reference (no, you don't have to explain it to me)...

reply

Well if you don't want it explained than STHU...lmao....

That was uncalled for really; I was telling him I perfectly understand the "Generation" version concept, thank you...

reply

No it wasn't uncalled for. You are asking a question than one thing that can explain part of it you don't want to hear it. So I will make it simple for you. This is set over 20 years before the first transformers movies. Transformers always change their looks. That has always been. The first movie explained this very well how could you miss it??? Bumblebee was up and about before the first Transformers movie. Simple enough for you?????

I’ll just say this... after the young scout that is B-127 (Bumblebee) crashes on earth, he doesn’t necessarily look brand new when he’s found. ;)

reply

I hope that's something I missed, simply because the trailers make him look like a totally different Transformer; I'll have to watch the whole movie to feel better about this, I'm sure...anyway, it was just a feeling I was getting. I really do want to see the dumb plot direction go away; that was killing the whole experience for me...

Without wanting to give too much away, Bumblebee has at least three different appearances in the movie, but in the context of the movie, each different one makes sense, but it would have been extremely difficult for whoever cut the trailer to not have different scenes with Bumblebee looking different.
