Is this movie worth the ticket price?
Like around $8? Or should I wait for DVD? My tastes in movies usually lean toward the quirky, indie side.
Thanks in advance to anyone who responds!

It is absolutely worth it. I've seen it twice now and consider it one of the best of the year. Old school comedy, not shoot 'em and crash 'em crap. I sent my neighbours too and worried I'd oversold it. They loved it, parents and 3 girls 20-14 years old.
shareI guess that I constitute the exception, but Hunt for the Wilderpeople disappointed me and I rather regretted that I spent the $9.00. The film is not bad—I found it to be decent, 'watchable' entertainment—but writer-director Taika Waititi's flashy filmmaking style mitigated the movie's potential. To be sure, the film is modestly funny here and there, but too often, Waititi strains for humor and comedy. The results feel forced and excessive, and at the same time, he distracts from the poignancy and character relationships that he is trying to build. To be sure, there are pockets of poignancy, but they are constantly interrupted and diluted by the strained stabs at comedy, the gimmicky shots, and the high-speed montages. The results are erratic and unwieldy, a sort of overwrought farce-with-a-soul that fails to achieve consistency. A more organic blend of humor and poignancy, achieved through a more assured and unforced style, could have proved more powerful.
Hunt for the Wilderpeople is lively, is offers an arc, and it makes good use of New Zealand's luscious wilderness. But to me, it ultimately amounted to disposable entertainment of minor proportions, albeit with the potential for something greater.
I'm glad I saw the film on the big screen for the beautiful, swooping shots of the majestical (ha!) NZ landscape alone.
