The scene with the General at the armory?

What was your opinion of the scene with the General at the armory?

reply

If Lee is trying to fuel a race war, that scene will contribute.
(Side note: Same w/ the Jackson-vs-Dern confrontation/imagery in Hateful 8.)

It's all a pure and deliberate '*beep* you' that will polarize and infuriate the holy heck out of the white folks that we don't want to be any more polarized than they already are.
If Lee wants to do that, then fine, but he tries to come off as a leader in dealing with race relations - which is an outrageous hypocrisy.

That scene was cheap and profane. More racist than any anti-black racism that I've personally witnessed in my life.

"More racist than any anti-black racism that I've personally witnessed in my life."

Lolll! First, if you're white how much anti-black racism have you experienced? None, because your white. But if you think that scene was somehow as anti-white as hollywood is anti-black then Chi-raq might in fact be the only movie you've ever watched.

reply

These past 7 years whites have experienced a lot with these riots and anti-white police protests.

reply

This is the most ridiculous statement I have read in ages, and I'm reading the comments on IMDB.

reply

It was pure satire that ignorant racists will try to use to start this so-called race war. Anyone with even a quarter of a brain can see that the scene is satire. It's not real. It wouldn't happen. And anyone who thinks it could "start a race war" would be laughed right off the front lines.

reply

I totally agree that it is satire and over the top. I think it is interesting how many white people will get mad at it.

reply

Yeah, it's just unfunny satire. And for shame, because Lee's Bamboozled (2000)is really pretty funny. What happened to him?

reply

100.

reply

It did not work in this film. That bit of satire is for another movie. Lee and Willmont could have found a better ways to take over the armory.

reply

It was hilarious, although it is when the movie took an epic nosedive downhill. Seemed like something you would see in a Wayans Bros. satire.

reply

I'm white and I laughed at it. Not because it was funny, per se, but because it was so ridiculous I couldn't take it seriously. And, to be honest, there were several moments throughout the film I could describe in that way.

reply

To me, this movie was pretty good but kinda lost its way in the second half. Seemed like it was trying to be serious and too cartoonish all at the same time and it's just around the time of the armory where it starts to come apart a little.

And if you guys are interested, have a review of the film here- https://youtu.be/m8kk3hlq5CE

Trying to go for an informative, and hopefully something people think is funny, youtube channel so hope you guys like. Thanks.

The scene was funny, but it didn't fit into the film, especially at that point in the film. There were few missteps in the movie, but this was one.

reply

I didn't like it. The moments in this film that didn't work for me were the ones in which Spike Lee decided to be so over the top with the sexual and racial commentaries. Lysistrata is sexy, we get it. All of the women who took the armory are young and hot and black and brown. We get it. All of the writhing that the women were doing was unnecessary. Satire doesn't work when it has to be rammed down the throat of the viewer.

reply

I thought it was hysterical. The absurdist nature was consistent with the Aristophanes play. I also thought it was a relevant commentary on some current events.

Time to make up a new signature.
