Anyone else notice something about 80s song selections in the new season?

They have drastically cut down on the number of 80s pop tunes being used.

I wonder if this is something like the "Northern Exposure" effect - that, it is very hard to sell a series into syndication with copywrited music.

There's like 12 licensed songs in the first 2 episodes.

Pop on over to tunefind.com and check out how many songs were used in Season 3.

you mean the "Ally McBeal"

I don't think it matters as much today. "Cold Case" airs episodes with al original songs.

Apparently, the reason why Northern Exposure is not streamed widely is because of music rights issues.

Northern Exposure preceded Ally McBeal by seven years.

Yeah, but that's a good thing. Season 3 kind of overdid everything to sell the era instead of telling a story, including music, special effects, wardrobe, etc. Now the music is much more succinct, it's placed intentionally in almost every scene and it just sounds better imo.

reply

Syndication? Lol. Streaming originals killed syndication! They don't license to TV networks.

I think I know what TruMovieFan is talking about. It's kind of like something like putting the show or a season on Blu-Ray/DVD/4K/etc. The Melissa Joan Hart version of Sabrina The Teenage Witch had songs altered/changed or removed entirely for streaming services and/or DVD/Blu-Ray because they didn't have permission to use certain songs outside of the show airing on cable. Stranger Things Season 1 and 2 have been released on DVD/Blu-Ray. Season 3 hasn't yet though unless you buy a bootleg. Maybe Season 3 is having some issues being released officially on DVD/Blu-Ray because there is issues with the music/song choices throughout the season. So for Season 4, they cut back on song usage. That way it would be easier to release Season 4 on Blu-Ray/DVD IF they decide to release it. So maybe that's what TruMovieFan means by mentioning syndication.
