Afterlife was not only a ghostbusters film but a tribute to 80's family films. It had some elements from the Goonies in there, Gremlins, Poltergeist, the sense of Wonder from E.T and of course the original Ghostbusters. Afterlife basically was what JJ Abrahams bragged Super 8 was going to be . A throwback to old school 80's film making with a real Amblin vibe but unlike Super 8 this one actually delivered.
shareVery true. I noticed Reitman skillfully homaged the ending of ET nearly shot for shot and accomplished what JJ Abrahms failed to do with Super 8. I wish more directors imitated Spielbeg's style, hell I wish Spielberg still had his 80s style for that matter.

It very much felt like a modern film trying really hard to capture that old school Amblin feel without really being successful at it. Too much CGI, barely any practical effects etc.. Afterlife really captured that old school vibe way, way more than Super 8.

I loved Afterlife, but it this comment describes it too. You're never gonna make a movie feel like it's from another decade, it's always going to feel like an imitation or homage in that sense.
I agree but Afterlife came the closest to it
