"I was in that movie just because they asked me, and I knew if I said no, I was saying I didn’t support that movie,” he said. “I felt like, OK, I’m going to support them because I support them as people. So I did that one and I would do this next one."

"The relationship you have with those people as collaborators is not necessarily the relationship I have with Sony,” he said. “For years, they said, ‘We can’t make another “Ghostbusters” because Bill Murray won’t change the deal he made in 1984.’ Well, no, I never did. And you know what? They made the movie. You’re the new guys, I’m the old guy. It was good enough for the other people so it’s going to have to be good enough for you."

A bit late since it's already written and in pre production.

They could've made a third film years ago without him, franchise movies can carry on without their original star, but the actors, studio and fans wanted to see Ghostbusters movies with Bill Murray in them.

reply

It's still possible for him to be in the movie.

But not likely in the majority.

You should check out the Ghostbusters subreddit. To save you the trip, Bill Murray has reportedly been spotted on set with Paul Rudd. And if they've got Bill on board, then expect Dan and Ernie to come back as well.

We can't change what was, but we can still look ahead and hope for the best.

Betcha ten bucks he's only on screen for a couple of minutes.

reply

Likely so because he's a old man, the og cast is too old to be the leads, when an actor goes over 50, 60 or 70 they're not hire as much.

Actually, Murray has an enviable career as a character actor, unlike Ackroyd he's always working, and getting accolades for what he does.

The quote above makes it sound like he's taking time out from his busy schedule to help out an old pal, but not wholeheartedly.
