Amy is mad annoying

How can Jonah ever fall for her? Is she constantly pmsing? Every time she talks to Jonah she snaps at him

reply

"Pmsing"? Can you come up with a non-sexist reason to dislike her?

I am just copying and pasting my response here as I wrote on a another thread. This is just in case anyone on the show actually reads these things (which I doubt).

So far, I think the majority of the people who dislike Amy are sexist people. Sorry to say.

Anyway, here is what I wrote:

I completely disagree with the OP. I think she is fantastic.

First of all, if everyone was a flat-funny character, the show wouldn't have a ground. You need someone to be a real person to give the show life. America does this in my opinion, and she makes you care about the character. I did since the first episode. Also, she represents a real life person who is working this job. Her character encompasses all the reality. So yes, that can be a drag. But she plays it so well, just like she did in Ugly Betty. Casting her for this part was just perfect.

A huge problem I have with a lot of sit coms and comedies these days is that it lacks heart. When it does have it, it seems contrived. America Ferrera always brought a lot of heart into Ugly Betty, and she does that for Superstore as well (less so than on Betty but a fitting amount for this format).

On top of this, America Ferrera is funny when her character has to be funny. I am Asian myself, and I was laughing hysterically when she did her Asian impression.

I do think her character is both funny and endearing and I think the people who have a problem with her are either 1. Men who think all women are bitchy in some way or 2. Women who see their own negative characteristics in the character and say that they don't like her.

For example, if you saw the movie "The Family Stone" - Sarah Jessica Parker plays an uptight prude bitch. One of my friends who is exactly like her said she hated her character. And I was just thinking in my head, that's you... She said she hated that she was so uptight... I was thinking... also you. Sometimes people don't want to see themselves, or have these negative traits brought to light.

And I am sure men across the world cannot be bothered to like a female who is the least bit bitchy.

I think America's performance is great, and I like Amy's character. She reacts to everything the same way I do (/normal people would). Her character has done nothing that was out of the ordinary for a regular person. Her character is supposed to be the norm.

I really like her as an actor and as Amy.

Each character in this show is unique, and I like all of them.

I get it, I wouldn't necessarily be best friends with her, but she really works for the show as a character. It's called sparring, Amy and Jonah have a lot of chemistry (obviously). A lot of that has to do with their back and forth. An amicable, friendly relationship would be super boring.

Yeah, I think she's terrible. I worked almost 5 years in retail, in a clothing store, and even the most weary of working retail people aren't ALWAYS so crabby and meh as she is. She's not shown any likeable traits at all. She's just a drag.

reply

Oddly enough I don't mind her character too much even though I've never been fond of her as a person. Some people just give off a snobby/bitchy vibe, and she's one.

reply

I wouldn't say she gives off a bitchy vibe. She's actually pretty nice to most of the other characters. It's just Jonah that gets her hackles up, for two reasons:

1. Class tension: Amy's low social-educational status is a painfully sensitive point for her. Although Jonah doesn't mean to, almost from the moment they met in the pilot, he has been jabbing her repeatedly in her sensitive point.

2. Personality tension: Amy is responsible, organized and fiercely practical. Jonah is happy-go-lucky and impulsive. Amy shows tolerance for the lack of pragmatism in the younger characters like Cheyenene, attempting to use persuasion rather than getting mad. But Jonah is roughly her age, so she isn't as lenient. Their different viewpoints on everything cause them to clash, but, at the same time, cause them to learn from each other.

"You two ought to be ashamed of yourselves . . . two grown men acting like . . . grown men!!!"

reply

I think she's fine.

Jonah is annoying too sometimes. I really liked the first episode where she put back on her wedding ring...it kinda reminded me of a Jim and Pam type of relationship, but they haven't really explored that too much.

reply

Amy is much better this season. Dina is now the problem child.

reply

I agree. Her character type is uptight female lead character - so clichee.
