The state of Hollywood Comedies

Neighbors 1 was bad, this was worse. Why has American mainstream comedy become so dire? When you think of the sophisticated gold of Billy Wilder or Howard Hawks, the slapstick of Laurel and Hardy or Buster Keaton, the inspired nonsense of the Marx Brothers. Nowadays, we get 'f...' every other word, jokes about tampons, babies playing with dildos, etc. Where's the wit, the wordplay, the pathos, the heart? Twenty years ago we had Groundhog Day or Clueless. Now we get Horrible Bosses, Hot Tub Time Machine and this. What's going on?

Basically, it's a microcosm of the dumbing down of society as a whole. You can see it in many other aspects of life at any moment.

reply

What's going on is Hollywood gets lazier with every passing day so they want to make as much money as possible for as little work as possible so it's easier to 'let's just do dumb shlt for 90 minutes' instead of REAL comedy, which is HARD work because it's SERIOUS.

I loved the original neighbors. I laughed the entire time. This one was all about feminism, gay love, hating men, and it wasn't even funny.

PS: can someone tell me how to write a user review on this damn app? I can't figure it out for the life of me. I feel like a retard

AMEN, OP. I completely agree.

Horrible movie.
The 70,80s,90s had many great comedies, but the last 15 years, boy, the quality went down the pipes.
Sure we`ve had dumb silly movies, but this is just unwatchable.

For both comedies as well as other genres, the main problems are laziness and greed while at the same time staying safe. That in turn was not helped by the lack of expectations from typical viewers. That could best be seen by the superheroes films, where so many of the original standalone superheroes are now grouped together so that it has become almost impossible to understand any new film without investing 30 hours or more on the previous ones. But that was what the viewers want, the more the merrier.

As for Neighbors 2, the first film was not too good to begin with, but it did generate a few good laughs for most people and the idea of moving next to a fraternity house was rather funny and fairly novel at the time. But for Neighbors 2 the idea was no longer new and the writing of the script has become lazy. Basically you have the same couple and you substitute "sorority" for "fraternity", and have the girls starting noise and trouble and you have the new film. Obviously, the intention is just to capitalize on the popularity of the first film among some viewers to grab additional cash. In the same way, I guess there will eventually be Hangover 6 or 7 as long as people pay to see them, though the stories and scenarios have become increasing preposterous.

Neighbors 2 has a strong cast and Efron, Moretz, Franco etc. are certainly capable of better things, but the film is not likely to add much to their credentials.

I think that everything has been done and people are desensitized to a lot of the comedy out there...

I could say the same of horror movies.. What happened to the Jaws..Shining...Exorcist..?? Budgets are bigger...effects are better..and movies all around are getting crappier...

Same with music....Stones...Beatles..Zep...

My point is people like their entertainment fast and simple...like their food....everything has been done before so you either stick a Fxxx Yxx every second line or gross out your audience...I stll watch new movies and sometimes find something refreshing...but most of the time..it was a filler...like a big mac...I ll never regret watching anything..but I always hope for something I ll remember...

"Everything has been done before."

Keep repeating that mantra, and you'll stay as old and grumpy as your post suggest.
Haven't seen the film yet, but your attitude stinks of "I miss the good old days", not "Neighbors 2 was remake of a big mac."

Any year of film can be seen as awful if you pull examples from the entire history of cinema to compare it to. There was just as much garbage in cinema in those years but anything that didn't stand the test of time to become a classic have been forgotten.

I agree with you. I like Seth Rogen sometimes, especially Superbad, but I don't like when movies get this lazy. This and Sausage Party were both pretty bad and get way too much credit. Just because you're pushing the boundaries of rudeness does not mean it's necessarily funny. You still should be just a little bit surprising. Now all this crudeness has gotten to a point where its all just played out.

Trying to create a funny, engaging YouTube channel. If you guys check it out, hope you enjoy what you see. Thanks in advance.
