Why aren't they even attempting to treat the patients?

They have the patients quarantined, but they're not even giving them so much as I.V. fluids! Not to mention trying antibiotics or antiviral medications. It's a hospital and they aren't even being seen by doctors! The doctors could treat them while wearing hazard suits. Is there some obvious thing I'm missing, or is this a huge mistake in the show?

I was surprised that they weren't even giving them fluids ect, it all felt as though they just prepared them for their imminent death.

I agree that they could be doing more to treat people to try and prolong their lives to see if their immune system could catch up with this fast moving virus. In the first episode though after they brought in the Syrian family one of then came at a health care worker and ripped off their googles and mask and coughed blood in their face. So initially they were doing something but as Heath care workers also got infected and die you are going to run out of people to care for the sick.

At the beginning, they did, but as the virus progressed there were fewer doctors and nurses and it's obvious I.v. doesn't work, spent bother?

A drip only helps in certain circumstances, and the speed of the virus means there isn't enough time!

Yeah, not even some gauze or a warm wet washcloth to wipe the blood from their faces? They just sit there or stand there on display with bodily fluids running from their orifices?

Get a Kleenex for crying out loud.

They were able to determine from the beginning that the disease was fatal (and death came quickly) and that the incubation period was 48 - until towards the end when they discover 48 hours weren't enough in at least one case. So any intravenous interventions for those who were sick was dangerous for the health care workers and possible spread of the disease.

Like a lot of people have said, they explained it in the first episode. Waste of resources, high risk of personnel becoming infected.

It may sound cruel (and the whole idea of a quarantine/cordon sanitaire itself) but in our world, viral/bacterial infection spreads so quickly. Even within the confines of this show, there was no way that they were able to contain the virus.

And even so, the doctor was looking for ways to prolong the lives of the infected. I think it was around ep5. So it's not like he was just sitting there with his thumbs up his butt.

First they need to understand the outbreak. If the wrong treatment is used, it is a waste of resources or make the 'disease' worse. They need to be able to use the most effective treatment.

If you needed a cigarette lit, would you use a blow torch?

Or, throw out the baby with the bath water.
