No, I am not overly worried about travelling to other countries. Yes, at this point in time there is danger, but, at the same time, I have an equal chance of encountering a dangerous situation here at home in the USA as I do in travelling to another country. Way back in the dark ages, the early 70s, a friend of mine from high school and I, both working and living with our parents, did some travelling. We went to Canada on a bus tour, visited several states on other bus tours, and then found a very reasonably priced trip to Europe - London and Paris to be specific. We had a blast in London - we had lots of free time to explore and book tours that were not included in the original package. Being native New Yorkers, the subway system in London was right up our alley to get around and see things on our own. Paris was a different story. Neither of us spoke any French, so we pretty much stuck with the tours that were included with the trip package. We spent a lot of our free time at the Louvre - not a bad way to pass time. We would have been better off if some of the technology available today were available then. We could have gotten a lot more out of our time in Paris if we had been able to look up how to ask about what we wanted to see while we were in France, and current technology would have enabled us to communicate more effectively with the people we encountered. I am terrified of flying, but if I had the money, I would love to take my grandson, who has autism, to Europe to see historical sites and learn more about history. I would love to visit Egypt and view the pyramids and the Sphinx. I would love to take my grandson to Germany, and show him that not all Germans supported Hitler. Our family came to the USA from Poland and Lithuania in the late 1800s - early 1900s. I would love to be able to visit those countries and get a picture of what life was like for my immediate ancestors. I would also love to visit Ellis Island to see what my grandparents would have experienced when they came to the USA. Every year, around July 4, varying websites post sample questions from the Citizenship Test given to aspiring citizens of the USA. Every year, I take at least one, in honor of my grandparents.
