Slightly disturbed by the scene where they kiss...

Now first off, I haven't actually seen this movie yet. But I've been reading a lot about it, and I've seen scenes from the film on Youtube. And one of them I saw was the one where Sam Elliot's character promises to give her the money if she gives him a kiss. Obviously she doesn't want to since she's gay but she does it anyway so that he'll give her the money she needs. Now I was already annoyed when he asks her to "please make love to me once". Of course she turned him down, but she didn't seem more in your face about it like I was expecting. Something like "are you kidding me?! I'm gay! Of course I'm not going to!" But why would he ask her when he most likely knows what her sexuality is? And why the hell would the writer/director have that scene in there, when he must know how often gay characters are negatively portrayed in film and not always "taken seriously".

But here's my main problem with that scene. Her granddaughter catches her while she was kissing him, seems to freak out and run off. Please, someone tell me that Lily Tomlin's character explained to her why she really kissed him later on in the film. I would hate to think that her granddaughter would think she was "faking" her sexuality, and won't take gay people seriously. That would really suck. So does she tell her that the kiss was because she had to, and had nothing to do with attraction? I just really want to know all of these before I watch the film. Thanks :-)

My goodness...

You could have saved yourself all the contempt simply by actually investigating beforehand. 

Go see the movie and you'll see. 

That is one of the most dramatic and complex scenes in the movie: lotsa turbulent romantic history between them. It really plays out rather sympathetically in the man's favor and, to be honest, "Grandma" was initially rather narcissistic in her behavior towards him: she wants the money, period, and his feelings be damned!
Your worries are pretty unfounded: he's blinded to her true sexual identity due to his woundedness and seems to have lived a life in compensation for the losses he experienced with her.
Really an amazing scene!

Doesn't bloody matter what orientation people have. They still shouldn't be asked to give sexual favours as a transaction, yk, unless they are openly offering prostitution. Seems to me it was a feminist comment on TYPICAL shitty male behaviour, in fact.
