Timetravel-messed-up ending of season 2 and episode 3x01

I hoped they´ll find a good explanation for that time travel messed up ending. Because if young Ash never arrived at the cabin - everything would have changed in the future. No Ashy-Slashy.

But in episode 3x01 the only nod to the timetravel-mess came from Pablo: "When we came back - nothing was changed"

I hope this is not all what we get, but a hint for more to come.

Maybe, they are trapped in the past and Ruby build some kind of illusion for them.

Maybe they never went to the past it was all an illusion

That's what I sort of figured - or rather that the happy ending of Season 2 was just an illusion, because it made no sense.
