He was just sentenced to death by Alfred, was tricked into a huge debt by him and had his glory for winning a battle that saved the land taken away from him.
I like the show, alot, but its starting to reach an ridiculous unbelievability that Uthred would still remain loyal to this man that has screwed him over every time they meet. If this show had any reality in it at all Uthred would have taken a sword to Alfred when he boarded his boat in the swamp. Then joined up with his adoptive brother. There is absolutely no reason Uthred would have lifted a finger to save Alfred's kingdom. Its so unbelievably frustrating that I'm considering not watching any more. As good as it is, when characters don't act believably it kills the show for me. It's outright stupid. I'm betting Alfred doesn't even free him of his debt even now after he has saved Alfred's kingdom a second time and Alfred's son.
OP, this was my biggest problem with the series also! I was forced to watch this with my partner who enjoyed it a lot, but for me i just couldn't understand how Uhtred was at one moment doing what he liked, killing people who stole from him, devil make care attitude, and then the next he's on the floor crawling for forgiveness? It seemed like i was watching completely different characters, there was no organic transition between Uhtred's state of mind. And it happened over and over and OVER again... And the king was no inspiring figure, he never did anything to make the viewer feel like he deserved any kind of loyalty or admiration.. the whole thing was a mess.
I completely agree. I spent several episodes expecting him to put a sword through the weak manipulative d*ck and he never does, he just keeps helping him for NOTHING in return, no respect in either direction, and no good reason.
Hook up with Ragnar the Younger and Brida, avenge Ragnar's death, save the sister, take whatever lands he wants because without his help, Alfred loses huge.
He's a victim of terrible plotting and not being very smart. Which makes for a crap heroic lead.
King ALfred was anything but "weak".... and why would Uthred kill a king? He's be executed on the spot. lol> he was lucky he was not killed when he pulled a sword on Alfred during a mass he busted into.
But I do agree Uthred is stupid, disrespectful of others customs and easily manipulated> he has an over inflated ego and expected Alfred to trust him, He didnt.

He's utterly helpless. He can't fight. He can't even talk to "normal" men. He's constantly whining about stomach complaints, limping around, eating gruel, and upset about his "disturbed peace." Oh poor baby, you're at war. Go join a monastery.
You can't yell at people, "you will respect me." And expect that to garner respect. You have to do something. All Alfred has done is praise the wrong people, be narrow minded accepting advice, and not treat people with fairness or justice.
The first time you send me to die, fair enough I'll earn my place. The second? The third? Um, no, at some point, Uhtred should have walked away. He was getting nothing from Alfred except debt and annoyance.
Alfred was lucky all he did was pull the sword. Plot armor to the rescue.

Your problem is that you are basing your perception of Alfred on this fictional series through the eyes of its fictional protaganist. To lauch into an impassioned tirade about a historical figure on the basis of a work of fiction is rather unwise at best.
I would recommend that you read up from some non-fiction books and listen to some non-fiction TV shows on Alfred and his life and times. This was a man who did an incredible job of ruling and strenghtening his Kingdom, whilst battling a debilitating illness for much of his adult life.

After all the drama between Alfred and Uhtred, Alfred finally acknowledged Uhtred's contribution to his kingdom and gave Uhtred the blessing to reclaim Bebbanburg. That was in the end of Episode 8.
I also got annoyed at Alfred for screwing Uhtred several times, but Uhtred definitely didn't help himself with his impulsive behavior either. Alfred is also cautious and didn't know whether Uhtred can be trusted in the beginning. Now that Alfred knows Uhtred is ambitious but also keeps his word, Alfred has treated Uhtred the way Uhtred always wanted to be treated.
