That first scene were they are caught in checkpoint and they both pull out pistols like a *beep* john woo movie...holy *beep* what a terrible piece of crap movie.
They were bluffing because they had no other choice and were about to be shot anyway, so they tried a desperate measure -- plus a clever lie about an overhead drone -- and it worked and it saved their necks.
I agree that if it really didn't happen, they shouldn't have included it. But, the scene did establish how dangerous a place Benghazi was/is. Also, things like this do happen in war. People can bluff and talk their way out of deadly situations -- sometimes. Sometimes not.
The book said there was an uneventful checkpoint stop for these two individuals, but weeks earlier there had been one where guns had been drawn and the individuals at that time talked their way out of it, so it seems reasonable to put it in as an example of the kinds of things that did happen around that time.
