Ye, I've been wondering if they're going to keep pretending she's a kid for the entire show. Well it seems they still are for some reason but at least one character acknowledges the fact that she's obviously not a kid.

reply

In terms of this show they've confirmed her age as 16.

reply

I think you are misunderstanding the whole thing. It seems to me this is a clue to her past and her true nature. It reminds me of Firefly, when in the last episode Jubal Early said about Shepperd Book, "he ain't no shepperd," and later we learn why.

reply

She's still an adolescent. A thirty year old man may behave like a child... that doesn't mean he is one.

All they were doing was acknowledging is that while the crew may not take advantage of her young nature, the kidnappers see her as fair game and an easily incapacitated victim (which they would whether or not she was 16, 12, 20, 30 - because they're creepy and smelly misogynists like that). If they actually bothered to take her for competent, they wouldn't have ended up with a spoon in the ear, shot and rescued by her friend, or have been given any real grief as a result of her.

reply

There are plenty of 14\15\16 year olds that have cleavage like hers. Ariel Winter, the actress who played Punky Brewster... and thanks to steroids in the foods we eat girls are "blossoming" younger and younger. Point is, it is not unusual for a 16 year old to have her "lady parts". But since the character is written to be underage I doubt we'll see a change in wardrobe. Also, chances are the character had some nasty experiences in her past due to her early growth and while her memories may be gone; she is still dressing down as that is what she knows.

reply

The actress playing the part is clearly in her 20s and it is a bit creepy how they pretend she is what 15 years old or so ;)

Would be nice if they can get the android to speak with a natural voice (they even have a plot device to do so) so we can avoid more of Zoie Palmer sounding like A... BAD...ROBOT...FROM...THE....50s...

reply

Yea she will be 22 next month, I think she looks young enough to pass playing a 18-19 year old but 16 is pushing it I think.

I definitely agree that she doesn't look 16. That said, I remember meetings a friend's son -- he was only 13 and was already over 6 feet tall and growing, and looked like a college basketball player. I also am frequently mistaken for someone much younger. People have a hard time accepting that I'm 56. I've always looked young for my age -- I used to get carded at bars and theaters (for R movies) even into my 30s.

Genetics is funny that way. If you make too many assumptions based on appearances alone, you'll find that you'll be wrong at least some of the time.

reply

I'm 54 and my son is 31 and we are frequently mistaken for brother and sister, boyfriend and girlfriend, even husband and wife. I look young for my age, he looks older, I guess together we look about the same. We had a friend in the scout troop who had the same thing with her son. He was big and muscular, she was very small and dainty, people thought they were a couple. Can't really tell from appearance.

But 18-19 is not a kid either. She just doesn't come off as a kid. She looks nothing like a kid. I can't buy into her being any younger than 18.
She looks to be in her early 20s just like she is.

reply

We all have a predisposition, though, to not accept that she's 16 because of that knowledge that she isn't. You'd probably be amazed to find out just how much of our perception is dictated by our assumptions. And it isn't just our visual perceptions, though those are affected also, but all our senses.

I know this may seem like a bit of a tangent, but there's this psychological affect called Pareidolia, where human beings impose meaning on meaningless patterns. You can listen to a song, and swear that the singer is singing one thing, when he's singing something completely different. The problem is that once you hear it one way, it gets stuck in your mind in that pattern, and is almost impossible to undo by yourself. We see faces in rocks and stains. We are even influenced to taste things that are not there. For example, they've done experiments where tap water was put into different kinds of fancy bottles, and given to people and even though the water all came from the same source, people swear that they are different, and can even describe in great detail how the different waters taste. True story -- wine from an expensive-looking bottle tastes different than the same exact wine from a cheap-looking bottle. And my point of all this is that knowing that she's older can influence your acceptance of her in the role. What if she really was 16? Would there be so much discussion about her age here? I doubt it.

And because I, myself, have always been mistaken for being much younger than I am, it's something that I've become very used to. Yes, I agree that she looks older than she is. But I also know that that she very well COULD be 16, simply because I myself don't look my age, and I know people who also don't look their age (both looking older and younger than they are).

reply

I think you're right and if people didn't know how old Jodelle really is, they would accept her as sixteen.

reply

I had no idea how old she was before I read this thread. The very reason I clicked this is because I never bought her as a 16 year old, it wasn't until after I started reading comments here that I actually found out her true age which was pretty much exactly what I guessed.

reply

I had to look her up because I didn't buy her as a 'kid' and couldn't understand why she was written that way.

It isn't a breast-size thing either. It's her eyes. She exudes more maturity than a teen...she always came off to me as an adult.

reply

But there are adults who come off as child-like and children who come off as adult-like. I had an acquaintance in High School who looked so adult that no one ever checked his ID. He was smart, mature, even worked as a bartender while he was under-age.

We make assumptions based on all sorts of clues. As I said, humans are wired to find patterns and make those kinds of assumptions. It's so commonplace that psychologists have created a name for it: "Confirmation Bias". It gives us the impression that we are correct more often than we actually are in reality. It's the same reason why almost everyone, if you ask them, believes that they are above average at driving, that they are on average, good people, that they are better than average judges of character, that they are better than average at guessing ages, and so on. It's mathematically impossible for that to be true for everyone who believes it, yet so many of us actually do believe those things. Sometimes it works out as we expect, and when that happens, it only reinforces our overconfidence. The problem is that overconfidence means that we ignore our mistakes, and that we make a hell of a lot of mistakes that we never actually notice. Mostly, those mistakes are harmless, like guessing how old an actress is. But with some things, it can lead to disaster.

You are best off not making assumptions. Plus, it makes it easier to enjoy TV shows and movies when we don't assume that an actress is too old or young to play a part.

reply

But 18-19 is not a kid either.

Most 18-19 year olds of today are definitely what I would refer to as kids. They're certainly not adults.

This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

reply

Yes she is in her 20's. She has been around for a while, usually playing in horror movies like "Case 39".

reply

The actress playing the part is clearly in her 20s and it is a bit creepy how they pretend she is what 15 years old or so ;)

The costume works well, though, as she looks like a 16-17 year old at that 'frumpy' sort of 'puppy fat' stage some young women go through (along with the crazy hair and accessories), before they finally figure out what kind of look(s) suit them better... and in some cases make them look seriously hot!!

Would be nice if they can get the android to speak with a natural voice (they even have a plot device to do so) so we can avoid more of Zoie Palmer sounding like A... BAD...ROBOT...FROM...THE....50s...

Part of that is also a plot device, because she feels more herself when speaking like that... it also lends itself to certain line deliveries that other characters can't do, for the same reason. Like when she talks about Boone's outfit - Wouldn't have been as funny done any other way!!

reply

Why creepy? 20-somethings playing teens is a time-honored tradition.

Agree on the android. I liked her when she had more of a personality, probably nice for the actress to be able to show a little more of her range as well.

This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

reply

Heck many 12/13yo have big breasts even at that age. But overall she definitely does not look like a 15yo, though she could pass for an 18yo easy.

reply

The show is 3 years old soon. She was 16 at the starts. SO her character is definitely adult age now being 18-19 (maybe 20) in season 3. So she's not a kid anymore unless they will keep trying to play the cute kid for another season or 2.

I think you are right. Five is starting to age now. That is unless they pull an 'Under the Dome' and it turns out all the events of the show only took place over 3 weeks. 😂

reply

That's not the case because in the episode where the android was repairing itself and 2, 3 and 4 were mentally reset to before the mind wipe, they mentioned the past 14 months was lost to them. The ships clock showed how much time had passed So a season appears to be roughly a year.

reply

Thankfully it is not 'cause that ruined 'Under the Dome' for me and I couldn't buy Barbie and Julia as a couple after finding out how little time had passed between them.

It really depends on your age and perspective. I'm in my late 50s and call my grandsons in their late teens kid and kiddos. I certainly don't view them as adolescents, they are young adults, but they sure do a lot of childish things still. Until they truly act like an adult, from going through the experiences in life, they seem young. Also if your a parent or guardian it is hard to let go of your child's youth.

I explained, in this comment, why I think the lovely young adult Jodelle Ferland was cast as a spooky adolescent.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4159076/board/nest/259712126?d=260670496#260670496

Ms Ferland is a fine actress. And she did an excellent job as a tiny pre-teen, and a tiny adolescent, playing tiny, mysterious, spooky, intelligent characters.

I suggested that when the producers were casting this role they told the casting director to find them a young Jodelle Ferland type, and he or she couldn't find anyone, so they cast the actual Jodelle Ferland, in spite of her no longer looking like a scrawny adolescent.

Because she is a fine actor, I'll ride with it.

reply

Yes the actress does a good job it just didn't quite feel right or look right for her to play a teenager anymore. That said I remember kids in 90210 back in the day in the 30s pretending to be teenagers ;)

Still the android robot voice has to go before I smash my head into a brick wall..

reply

Love Blonde 5. Definitely makes her look older.
