Spoilers alert: Have ever been a movie where the bad guys trully wins?

I loved this movie, is the best MCU but is also the saddest and darker of them all.

Thanos WITHOUT the Infinity Gaunlet is super strong, so strong that he beats and scares Hulk. Then with the Infinity Gaunlet, he just became a god and trully invencible. (I don't think Captain Marvel or Adam Warlock or any other godlike Marvel character can take him).

My opinion is Thanos in AIW is even more OP than in the Comics. He is just that over the top.

In fact, in the very end with the "snap-erase-50% everything-thing", AIM became kind of a horror movie.

Empire Strikes Back, probably several movies with criminal protagonists who are technically bad guys.

reply

The Usual Suspect... Some others...

However, for an adventur/action film like this one, the only one I remember is Empire Stikes Back, and the villain never trully wins...

reply

Unforgiven is a bit like that.

reply

Unforgiven ?! surely not !

reply

Awesome movie, one of my favorites, but a ruthless killer kills all of the good guys. Not exactly a heroic ending.

reply

Good guys ?!!

Little bill and his men were anything but good guys !

reply

A hard hand of the law,but they followed the law. Bill was insistent on the boys getting a trial, and whipped the shit outvof them,as they deserve. I definitely think of Bill as a good guy,but you'd have to be tough as shit to do his job in that time.

I got the same feeling. It felt very much like the Bible's rapture, it was terrifying, even if it wasn't as impactful as it would have been if they had died a physical death.

reply

Agree. However, if you ask me Parker’s “demise” was as impactful as any physical (movie) death would have been. The kid said he didn’t feel so good, and man... you can certainly tell he was experiencing something horrifying.

Putting all those memes of this unforgettable moment aside (which can easily ruin a serious scene like this), Pete’s final seconds on screen are just haunting.

"Life" 2017

"Dread" 2009

"No Country for Old Men" 2007

"Se7en" 1995 (This is debatable depending on your definition of "win")

"Funny Games" 1997

T3?

Yes!

Spoiler altert for half a dozen movies 😉

Loads of movies have the bad guys win... Lots of good movies below...

'Arguably', these historical movies had the "bad guys" win, or at least bad outcomes...
- W. (2008)
- Dunkirk (2017) - Temporary win for Nazi germany
- The Good Shepard (2006) - CIA wins and becomes powerful

Then there are the genre movies... Noir movies, horror and crime have loads of bad guys win... Sometimes the protagonist is a 'bad guy' anyway...
- The Ghost Writer (2010)
- Gone Girl (2014)
- American Gangster (2007)
- American Psycho (2001)
- Basic Instinct (1992)
- Chinatown (1974)
- Cloverfield (2008) - Ambigious
- Drag Me to Hell (2009)
- Mr. Brooks (2007)

reply

Chinatown is probably the best and most disturbing bad-guy-win movie. The ending is truly sad, disturbing and unfair. The father is just despicable.
Obviously also Seven, the bad guy dies, but he wins 100% at the same time.

reply

Ah... Yes, Seven, he get's to see his idea come true...

The ending of Chinatown is a real downer, but so appropriate for the movie...

reply

Quite a few, yes.

But for a mega huge blockbuster/action/CBM (part of a massively popular franchise, no less), I can’t think of any that had the main villain succeeding, let alone a villain who succeeded by eliminating half the universe. (And yes, I’m aware of Empire Strikes Back.) If there is another big movie that ends with the villain claiming victory and gives the good guys zero hope, then the list is clearly a short one.

So yeah, Infinity War’s unexpected and chilling ending is truly one of a kind in its own right. The impact it’s had is palpable.

PS. Thanos has won... for now.

reply

Saw (2004)
Fallen (1998)

reply

Yes, iconic and sinister endings. But like I mentioned, Infinity War is a huge movie. While the first Saw started a popular franchise, it was an independent movie. Not on the same radar as the highly anticipated third Avengers.

reply

Sure. Btw, I didn't mean to reply to your post specifically.

reply

He hasn't truly won, this is just Part 1 of a 2 part movie really.
