Many box office Record and records including some of the biggest and most important records....
The Most Successful CBM of all time
The Most Profitable CBM of all time...
The Avengers Franchise Is Now Officially Box Office 's Most Bankable Franchise...ONLY franchise ever to start off With Three 1.4 Billion dollar + films....
Will Soon become 4 after Avengers 4 ....
and actually If we Count Civil War(which is an Avengers films) that will be 5 straight 1 Billion dollar + films...
Avengers could also become the only franchise in history with Two 2 Billion + films if Avengers 4 has similar success as Avengers IW...
I had to hunt for the other post where we discussed this, but I found my box office guesses. As someone who has no deep knowledge of the workings of the box office numbers, I think my guesses look fairly close so far:
"I wouldn't go so far as calling this a prediction, but my guess is something like
Opening Weekend: $225-250 million (but $300 million would not shock me)
Second Week $125-175 million (but $200 million would not shock me)
Total Domestic Box Office anywhere from $500 to $700 million, based on critics and word of mouth"
*edited to fix a typo-- I meant second full week, not second weekend
were both pretty close, But I must I think your off on the second weekend...I'm expecting an Average second weekend drop...nowhere close to Black Panther...
I think Avengers IW Will have a 55 to 58% drop and make between 90 to 110 Million...and then have 50 to 55% drops the rest of the way...
But from what I'm reading WOM is very good....It got An "A" cinemascore(Great, but pretty normal for MCU films)...But its beating AOU and Civil War is All other Tracking, which means audiences clearly are enjoying this more than AOU and CW...
"Word of mouth is huge with Screen Engine/ComScore’s PostTrak reporting a massive 83% definite recommend besting Captain America: Civil War‘s buzz (75%)"
"Screen Engine/ComScore’s PostTrak scores are huge showing 93% overall positive so far which bests the positive score for both Avengers: Age of Ultron (90%) and Captain America: Civil War (88%). "
^from deadline
they are now reporting 237 Million With a chance of getting even higher!
AIW is a Grand slam....237 M is so incredibly massive!
AIW will be over 500 Million by Sunday....and Over 900 Million by Next Sunday....and 1.4 Billion + total gross is coming, maybe even 1.5 Billion +
Yeah, I don't follow box office results enough to know how they work. I figured around half as much, or a little more, on the second weekend, as many people who tried to buy opening weekend tickets must have been forced to buy later dates due to sellouts.
I'll tell you one thing-- I'm good for at least two more tickets for myself, and a couple more for whoever I bring with me. I get the feeling this one will get a fair number of repeat viewers.
The record is 247 Million by TFA....They are predicting 245 M+ now for AIW....at this point its literally a pick em...If AIW has even a 1% better saturday or sunday than they are projecting, Its gonna break the record....!
another Astonishing thing that happening this weekend....
Black Panther is still in Theaters and is ONLY having a 22% drop...
you would think with AIW, which is in direct competition and also Features Black Panther....If theres ever gonna be a weekend when Black Panther has a bigger drop it would be this weekend...But Nope, stunningly BP is still holding Insanely well
And here we are on the opening of Ant Man and the Wasp and all three MCU films will be in theaters, albeit with AIW and BP in ever decreasing theater counts. Nonetheless all three will be shown in some theater complexes. That is probably NOT an accident or a fluke.
On top of that Disney has other films in theaters concurrently. Hmmmm, looks like Disney is making this a Disney Themed summer of entertainment. Too bad Solo had such backlash.
With Disney playing the long game (FOX acquisition) Solo will see a steady rotation in whatever streaming service Disney launches. What a way to make lemonade out of the Solo lemon. I personally don't know if Solo is good or bad as I haven't seen it yet.
Its now guarantee that AIW will have an Opening Bigger than Justice Leagues entire domestic gross!
keep in Mind just 2 years and 2 months ago....Justice League and Avengers IW were both announced as 2 part films....and expectations were Identical for both(BvS had not came out yet) The DCEU had not turned to shit...
This time 2 years and 2 months ago....there were massive debates going on, which film would make more ....Justice League Part 1 or Avengers IW Part 1....
my how 2 years have changed expectations....
AIW Will make more on Opening Weekend than JL did in its entire domestic run....and In every other way it will Double Justice League...
AIW is guaranteed to have a Domestic Gross that is Double what JL made
AIW is almost certainly going to make DOUBLE what JL made overseas
and World Wide IW Will at least Double JLs WW gross...
lol even RT rating is doubled
somehow Marvel Studios trajectory either stays about the same or keeps going up after 19 films....Yet after 5 The DCEU Trajectory is going straight to HELL
13 out of the 14 MCU sequels has out grossed their Predecessors....The ONLY exception was Age Of Ultron....and Now Avengers IW has corrected that course...
AIW now at 247.1 Million....Literally 800,000 dollars off the record, to close to call, May have to wait until monday to see if it breaks the record.
AIW broke the record for Largest Saturday gross With 80 Million...
Incredible, It either Broke the Opening weekend record or Tied it....I think By monday it Will come in over, It had a Fantastic Friday to Saturday hold, Sunday hold Will probably be great too
Avengers 4 opening will top that and TFA as everyone will want to see it the second it comes out to avoid all the spoilers of who 'really' makes it and doesn't
I would be surprised if SW9 makes more than 200 million weekend due to the brand being damaged from TLJ.
I wouldn't count Star Wars 9 out just yet. With J.J. Abrams back at the helm, anything's possible. He's got a remarkable track record, and the franchise is still the benchmark for fandom and devotion. Plus, be honest-- how much do you really believe The Last Jedi damaged the franchise? It received an A+ audience score, 91% positive reviews from critics, and earned over $1.3 billion dollars at the box office. While I personally didn't love it, I'm undoubtedly going to see SW9 at it's Thursday opening. Everyone is going to see it, just like every other Star Wars film, and if it's great, as was The Force Awakens, and much of what Abrams does, they'll go back and see it again, and again, and again.
The SW brand is tarnished. I doubt many will be in a hurry to see SW9 right off the bat. TLJ has split the fanbase. $1.3 billion is poor considering. Toy sales were poor as well. They pressed the panic button and got JJ to get it all back on track.
Kathleen Kennedy needs to get lost and I'm pretty sure she will be fired soon.
The SW brand is tarnished. I doubt many will be in a hurry to see SW9 right off the bat. TLJ has split the fanbase.
^^
ya but what you dont get is....
The fanbase doesnt actually make up A Large Percent of the audience that sees Star Wars films...
I do agree that the Die Hard Star wars fans seem to be split or maybe even more heavy toward hating the film...
luckily for Disney though, The Hardcore Star War fans, maybe make of about 10% of the audience that saw The Last Jedi, The overwhelming Majority of audience that sees Star Wars films and Blockbusters are The General Public, literally like 80% of the audience that bought tickets to Star Wars dont know enough about the franchise to be angry or upset at what bother Diehard fans, thats why you see such great scores and reviews for The Last Jedi, because The Majority LOVED it, The general Public, at least 80% of the audience that saw it, wasnt bothered one bit by any of the stuff that bothered Die hard fans...
I do believe, Star Wars 9 is going to have a clear drop in box office, I think the Hate among the Diehard fans is strong enough that some will protest and not see SW 9....
but were just not talking about enough of a audience to badly effect SW9s box office...
as I said The Star Wars fan base only makes up about 10 to 20% of the audience that sees these movies, so TLJ made 1.3 billion that means, The Star Wars fanbase accounted for about, 130 to 260 Million dollars worth of tickets/box office...
lets say 50 to 60 % of Hardcore Star Wars fans hated TLJ....
thats means at best, Maybe SW9 is gonna lose 130 to 150 Million in dollars in box office from these fans not coming back
Your right and your wrong...
there is a clear and undeniable Hatred for TLJ that will effect SW9....your right about that
But your wrong about it badly effecting the franchise or having a huge impact, The Hatred for the film it almost SOLELY among the diehard SW fans, that audience just isnt big enough to badly effect the Franchise or Audience....There is clear and undeniabl data and stats that The Overwhelming majority LOVED TLJ, The General Public gave TLJ great reviews and responses in everyway!
let me put the as Bluntly as possible....every single Die Hard Star Wars fan there is could skip SW 9...and Its still Making over 1 Billion!
The response from the general Public(the majority and at least 80% of the audience) is just too strong
I do believe some corrections should be made though, Its not a good thing to piss off your hardcore fanbase this much, I hope Disney and Kennedy arent just saying "who cares, The ones thart Hated it or disliked it dont matter enough"
there are clearly several things Disney and Kennedy are doing with these Star Wars films that clearly upset and infuriate the SW fanbase, they should listen and fix these issues...I'm not a Star Wars fan, I've never seen the original trilogy, But even I notice the forced Humor in TLJ and all the Female empowerment stuff...
so far though, They made and released 3 Star Wars films, those films have turned out to be the #1 highest grossing films of the year in 2015,2016,and 2017....They've been the Most Profitable films of the year, and made Disney a combined 1.3 Billion + in Profit, They've all been universally acclaimed and Loved...
to say the franchise is anything But On fire is simply just not true...
I get it, If your a Diehard SW your angry...But you cant just make stuff up, saying the franchise is in trouble or even in a decline is just not factual true....
There is a small minority(10% or less) that Hate what Disney is doing with these films....they are vocal and they are anger...they want change and are trying to get it....
Unfortunately for them, the 3 SW films have been colossal hits, and probably not much is going to change because Disney know The General Public is more than happy with these films...
SW9 is guaranteed to make over 1 Billion...depending on the quality, It easily make much more.
I'm implying that the next Star Wars film will massively underperform and that the brand, as a whole, is in need of someone who can get people excited about seeing it again - just like how Ridley Scott managed to damage his brand of the Alien franchise.
Prometheus 3 is meant to happen, when though is another matter altogether and whether it's a direct to DVD/Netflix movie will be the telling of confidence in the brand.
Star Wars must pull back at this point, they've squandered all their worth and have no story to tell anymore.
SW is absolutely not a lock to make over 1 billion. Getting to 1 billion is its best case scenario, with 700-800 million being far more likely.
^^^^
Yes it it...you dont understand box office
SW9 could literally be the worse film of all time, Literally get a "0%" on RT, get an "F" cinemascore and be considered the worst film of the centry....and still making more than 700 M
you could dont have that kinda of drop...not after 3 SW films that received great reviews, greats box office and Great ratings...
It takes Several AWFUL films for a franchise to drops like that...
I mean my God 4 out of the 5 DCEU films have been ALL TIME awful and it just now finally had that kind of drop with JL
the last 3 Pirates movies have been getting worse and worse and it still hasnt had the drop your suggesting...
The Last 4 Transformers films have been Universally hated, mocked films, yet it finally just now had a HUGE drop...
There just isnt a History of what your suggesting ....Maybe If TFA was Mixed, Then Rogue One got Bad reviews and Then The Last Jedi got awful reviews, Maybe after 3 Horrible films, we could except to see a Huge drop in Box office and a loss of audience...but the complete opposite of that happened...
instead you got 3 Universally Loved and acclaimed films, theres simply no way they can go from making 1 Billion + to 700 million...
there will be drop, I'm not denying that, The Small minority of Hardcore SW fans are very unhappy and I have no doubt, they Will boycott or Skip the next film...but as I said, theres just not enough to badly effect the Franchise or its box office...were talking maybe between 100 to 150 Million dollars worth of Angry SW fans, The rest, The Majority, At least 80% of the box office comes from The General Public, whos Loved all 3 SW film...
1 Billion + is Guaranteed, every single box office analyst and site Will predict SW8 to make over 1 B....not 1 will predict a 700 to 800 M gross....
TLJ was NOT "universally acclaimed and loved"
^^^^
do you understand what "Universally means"...
It does not mean EVERYONE....It means the Majority...
I completely admit, there was a minority that strongly disliked the film, I'm not claiming, EVERYONE Loved it...I'm claiming The Majority loved and thats not even debatable...
based on Literally anything data you look at, The Majority Consensus for TLJ is about 9 out of every 10 people liked it!
Its clear The Hardcore Star Wars fan base is Split or maybe even Split like 70/ 30 toward hating it...I clearly see and admit, that the portion doesnt not like the film and even might boycott SW9....the difference is I understand box office, and understand this portion of the audience isnt that BIG...at best The Hardcore SW fanbase makes up Maybe 10 to 20% that see Star Wars movies....
The rest, The Majority, is the general public, which is based on every single measure stick there is, has LOVED all 3 of Disneys Star Wars...
I get it, You Hate the Disneys SW films, your angry and want change, but I'm sorry you just cant make up facts...the 3 SW films have been run away successes, With The Majority of the Audiences giving then Universal Acclaim and Love....you are more than with you rights, to give your opinion, boycott the upcoming films, whatever...but you cant change reality and reality is...so Far the 3 Disney Star Wars film have been Universally Loved and Acclaimed(which again means The Majority, between 80 and 90% of the people that saw these movies LOVED them)...
"Universally" does not mean "the majority", it means "everyone" or reasonably close to it. For example, I will concede that TFA was universally acclaimed, because 8 or 9 out of 10 people, critics and audience, praised it.
TLJ had a huge disparity between the professional critics' views and the audience view, borne out by the Rotten Tomatoes data. It was still a huge box office success -- that cannot be denied, and I never did so -- but it was in no way "universally acclaimed".
TLJ suffered a 35% box office drop from the truly universally acclaimed TFA. It's more than reasonable to project that a 35% or greater drop will happen after the mixed bag that was TLJ. A 35% drop puts it at $845 million, which is still an unqualified box office success. I think the drop will be a bit steeper, which is why I project $700-800 million.
P.S. -- for the record, I liked Rogue One very much.
I'm in the older fan base (saw episode IV in the theaters!) and sorry....nothing beats Jar Jar and Jake Lloyd and Natalie Portman and of course, emo Annie. I'm fine with what they're doing now (maybe a bit too much female empowerment in the Last Jedi....every man was wrong and every woman was right....oy). I mean, Jedi was 35 years ago. I don't WANT to see old man Luke and Old Lady Leia running through hallways and swinging on cables.
Just beaten all time record of $250 over $248 TFA. Holy sheet.!
#AvengersInfinityWar crushed all films w/ new all-time record opening wknd of $250M edging out $248M of 2015's #StarWars ForceAwakens. Sets double daily records - biggest SAT ever ($83M) beating $69.6M of #JurassicWorld & #Avengers, and best SUN ever ($61M) beating $60.6M of TFA.
$630M WW. Biggest weekend worldwide ever and without China! 2 billion is a cert I'd say.
+ If that isn't enough Black Panther is back in the top 5. Crazy Times.
AIW got good reviews and seems to have a Great response...But overall Its not as Loved as The Avengers 1 or Black Panther....
I just dont think the responses to AIW has been Overwhelming Positive enough to get the same level of Hype for Avengers 4...
Basically if were being honest, If were ranking The response to AIW...
It would be Good to very Good, about an 8 out of 10
The Avengers and Black Panther were, Great to ALL time great, 10 out 10...
The Force Awakens was universally loved, IMO had a better overall response than IW, and the Last Jedi didnt top The Force Awakens opening Weekend...
Jurassic World opened to 208 Million....Its sequel is tracking at 149 Million...
Avengers opened to 207 Million, Had All time great WOM, AOU made 190 Million
If you look at the history of film opening over 200 M....Its basically Impossible for their sequel to match or exceed that Success...
I'm not going to say its Impossible for Avengers 4, But right now Id give it a less than 15% chance of Matching IWs 250 M opening...
AIW caught lightening in a bottle, Disney Marketed it Masterfully, Playing up the "10 years building to this" and "watch how it all ends"...the X Factor being Black Panther, Its clear now much of the audience that saw Black Panther carried over to AIW being that the had just seen Black Panther ....
I got to believe some of that audience wont return for A4...
I think A4 Will open between 210 to 230 Million....With a 250 M + opening Only possible if the film is ALL TIME Great.
I think what will draw people to it will be the avoidance of spoilers especially considering who ever is dead will stay dead this time. Over the next year many will be revisiting all the films and the hype will be too much to bear. I'd say it has a shot.
Avengers 4 is the end of this decade of building. The true end game. If not then I can't see any film in the near future beating these records. At least for the next few years.
I'm sorry, BP was a good movie but not a better movie than A:IW.
I rank BP in the same category as T:R and CA:CW. It's a solid 8 of 10 but certainly not a 10. I'm actually confounded by some of the over-praise for BP and wonder if people are basing the movie on it's merits or something else entirely. Did they see the same movie I did? BP has it's fair share of plot holes and character issues.
A:IW is on a slightly higher level as it's a culmination of everything that came before.
1. The Avengers
2. The Winter Soldier
3. Avengers IW
4. Civil War
5. GOTG
6. Thor Ragnarok
7. Black Panther
also worth nothing I have The Winter Soldier ahead of AIW because I feel its an overall Better Movie...but as far as CBM's go, I think AIW may be ahead of it, there are parts and things about AIW that are IMO THE BEST...
The Scale, Ambitious, Villain, stakes and Story in AIW is unlike anything In CBM history....
I wouldnt argue with anyone who has AIW as the best CBM of all time, I see things in the film that absolutely make in worthy of that title...
for me though, I have The Avengers, The Dark Knight and Logan has the 3 greatest CBMs of all time....with movies Like AIW, TWS, CW and Deadpool right behind them...
basically for me The top 10 and especially top 5 CBMs are so close I got to really get picky too separate them...
AIW and The Winter Soldier is going to be a tough decision for me in the years to come....I definitely feel TWS is the better overall movie and made better from a technical standpoint, but I feel AIW is on another level in Scale, execution and story...
regardless I dont put Black Panther near any of these films.....
Black Panther is a very good movie and a great origin story....but IMO it may be one of the most overrated CBMs ever....IMO due to the movement that got behind the film, Its regarded higher than it should be...
Find myself in agreement with most of your points.
I concur that Winter Soldier is the movie with the tightest narrative and some of the best action. That's when we all discovered the Russo brothers could direct a film but DAMN, hitting out of the park on their first up to bat? What a feat! That fight scene on the elevator alone, is one of the best ever.
You top 7 melds with my top 6, even if the top 3 are arranged differently. They are pretty close together. It's tough for me to settle between T:R and BP though. I liked both equally.
One of the podcasts I follow, they ranked the two best stand alone MCU movies as CA:WS and GOTG. I can't really argue that those two movies might be the cream of the crop but man, A:IW is such a spectacle to behold.
Kevin Feige must be sitting there with milk on his whiskers. What an accomplishment for him. I couldn't be more proud of him if I'd giving birth to him myself.
If I were in High School, and needed to give a Speech on Some One Famous,Important or something like that(I remember doing one on Muhammad Ali once)....I would pick Kevin Fiege and try to properly explain what Hes done and accomplished in the last 10 years
Unfortunately I'm 32 and my highschool days are over...but man if I was, I would put together a hell of a speech first explaining the unprecedented success hes had with the MCU films, Then explain how its changed the entire Industry resulting in every major studio trying to copying and replicate his MCU Idea and then try to articulate for Non Comic book Fans(class mates) what The creation of The Marvel Cinematic Universe truly means to Me as a Giant CB fan, To literally see my Childhood Dreams come true on screen, To see My favorite heroes crossing over to each others films, To see My absolute Dream come true in not 1,2,3, but 5 Avengers films(counting CW)
Hes a genius, He also has A PURE Talent for Casting and Picking Directors....That may be the most underrated thing about him..The Completely Unknown and Out of Box casting choices hes made that turned out to be The Actors that was born to Play the roles is astonishing, and The choice of directors is maybe more impressive, He has an Eye for what a certain movie is going to be and need and then finds the perfect director for it, Gunn, The Russos, Whedon, Favero, Waititi, Coogle...all literally perfect choices
Hes had a couple misses too, Whedon for Avengers 2 was a mistake, Taylor for Thor 2 was a bad call...
IMO by far Fiege biggest mistake and worst screw up in the MCU is OKing The Mandarin Twist....Shane Black wrote it, came up with idea brought it to Fiege, He signed off on it...
simply put Fiege is better than that...It was a massive creative failure, and has truly aged terribly, at the time there was a lot of people trying to defend it, now its Universally accepted it was a fuck up, so much so Marvel Studios tried to correct it with a one shot.
I think that one big mistake was letting Edgar Wright screw around for so long before they went with someone else to make the Ant Man movie. Ant Man should have been Phase One and a founding member of the Avengers. And creator of Ultron. The original Marvel Studios press releases hinted at the first three movies being Iron Man, Hulk, and Ant Man, with a nod to Thor and Captain America.
The only misstep in the MCU is Iron Man 3, however I lay the blame for the Mandarin decision squarely at the feet of Disney and their PC marketing division. They didn't want to offend the Chinese by having a Chinese villain (stupid thinking) and they even had an advisor from Communist China on hand during the filming. Can you believe that BS?!?
Iron Man 3 is easily the most divisive movie in the entire MCU. It gave Disney a black eye with Marvel fans and luckily, Disney seemingly learned their lesson about messing with the characters and stories. I trust Fiege completely, the man knows what he's doing; Disney I don't trust one bit and I worry what might happen to future Marvel movies once Fiege retires.
+ If that isn't enough Black Panther is back in the top 5. Crazy Times.
^
stunning that BP only had a 11% drop despite having direct competition from another superhero movie....
If there was ever a weekend BP should have a normal or even bad drop, It was this weekend instead it had a fantastic drop...
The Avengers IW and Black Panther may be the biggest back to back Successes for any studio of all time!
I believe you're correct on these movies being the biggest back-to-back successes for a studio. It's all about great storytelling and nobody is doing it better than Marvel right now.
First of all, can you feel that superhero fatigue? It looks like it’s finally setting in! We anti-comic book/anti-Marvel film nerds may once again start getting REAL films with totally original stories made again. Finally there will be no more “thousands” of these “cash grab kids movies” coming out every friggin year. Good riddance Marvel and Kevin Feige! ;)
Second of all, HOLY SHIT! *bows down*
Damn, this IS astonishing. It was uncertain if AIW was actually going to overtake TFA (I, um, BELIEVED in AIW) and ultimately it did... big time. I am stunned. It’s Marvel and Disney’s world, we just live in it. :)
The film might’ve divided some critics, and a good number of fans clearly weren’t prepared for the outcome, but the film truly delivered on all the hype. Magnificent piece of filmmaking and pure escapism that deserved to shatter all these records.
Now the question is, will it reach 2billion? I hope so.
UPDATE: Auds pouring into multiplexes today SUN for #AvengersInfinityWar which is holding up better than Disney projected, according to a source. SUN #boxoffice might break $70M for low 15% dip from SAT. Opening wknd may end up in stunning $255-260M range for even bigger record.
