This is the best comic book film I've ever seen in terms of a non-stop, exciting comic book come to life. I'd possibly rank a couple others as high in terms of overall cinematic qualities, but there has never been a better full-on comic book film than this. It was superbly paced, and though a large number of characters were featured, they were effortlessly juggled in way that nothing felt rushed and nearly everyone had a significant role. Most remarkably, though a second film is on the way, this told a complete story from start to finish, and it is completely satisfying on its own. If this had been it, and no sequel were pending, nothing more would need to be said, done, added, or omitted.
In short, it's a remarkable film. I've never seen anything like it, and it delivers in every conceivable way one could ever want an action film to deliver.
That's high praise indeed. How does it compare to my personal favorite super-team flick, the unique and mind-blowing (to me) "Watchmen"? And, another favorite, the highly entertaining "Captain America: Civil War"?
How about "Justice League" (which I haven't seen yet)?
I watched the first 1/3 or so of Watchmen and lost interest. I read the comic in its entirety and wasn't as enamored with it as most seem to be. It was too heavy-handed with its politics and seemed intent on beating its readers over the head with a Message every few minutes. I could forego that in the film had it just been more entertaining, but at some point it lost my interest and I turned it off. Nonetheless, I know it's a fan favorite, and I'll probably try to watch it again now that you've reminded me of it.
Civil War was pretty great. I liked Winter Solider better, but Civil War is solid. I best liked that it starts with a reasonable reason for a "two-hand-touch" war between Steve and Tony, which lead to that great all out battle at the airport, then threw a nice curveball-- the viewer expects all will be forgotten when the two heroes team up to take out the real villain, but instead we get a legit reason for the gloves to come off and a real war to take place. Exquisitely done.
Justice League-- not sure what to tell you. I found nothing interesting or entertaining about it at all. Like the previous two Superman films, I really really wanted to like it but could not.
As far as "Watchmen" goes, if you ever get around to revisiting it, see the theatrical version, which is the shorter rendition. It did an excellent job of cutting out the fat. The longer version has some quality additional material, but it slows down an already long film and therefore is best for uber-fans of the theatrical release.
The reason I favor "Watchmen" so much is because of it's moody atmosphere, great characters, compelling story and its utter uniqueness in the superhero genre. (I never read the graphic novel, btw). I call it the Apocalypse Now of superhero flicks. Which is why your statement about "Avengers: Infinity War" perked my attention:
it's a remarkable film. I've never seen anything like it
I'm probably not one to Judge it compared to Watchmen, I like Watchmen, but not nearly as much as you...
as for Justice League and Civil War...
IMO its better than Civil War, and going in Civil War was one of my favorote CBMs of all time, I think Civil War and Logan, have the best story ever in any CBMs...The absolutely Masterful way the crafted the conflict that divides the team and specifically Tony and Steve is IMO among the best writing in CBM history, The ending of Civil War is just astonishing, at that moment you completely understand and feel all sides, You understand why Tony is trying to Kill Bucky and is willing to go through Cap to get to him, You understand why steve is defending Bucky at all costs, and you can even feel for Bucky after watching him do something as evil as kill Tonys parents..Just Incredible.
But I think AIW is better, and it comes down to Thanos..Hes the greatest threat ever put on film in a CMB...He Owns The Movie, The scale, storylines and Stakes in the film simply puts it past Civil War...I do not feel AIW is the best CBM or maybe not even a better overall movie than CW...But AIW is unlike any CBM in History, there are things that happen in this film that have never been done, thought of or will never happen again...
as for JL...IMO Justice League is a complete train wreck, A Frankenstein monster of a movie...I'm not hard to please, Usually give me good action and I'm fine with anything else, Hell I like 4 of the 5 Transformers movies....But Justice League truely is A disaster of a film...It was made by 2 different directors that couldnt be any different when it comes to their approach and styles...and You literally feel in every scene of the movie, even during the action scenes, I'm not kidding, from the very second the film opens you can tell its a trainwreck, and I mean that literally, The first imagine you see, The first scene in the movie, Is a god awful scene Whedon added that is done on Camcorder where Supermans face and mouth is the worst it is in the entire movie, You can not focus on anything else other than the absurdity of Superman Fake Mouth....thats literally how the first opens...
the entire movie is a trainwreck where they are trying to course correct from BvS, and Maybe most shocking, even The Action is bad, the ending climax is badly effected by Them Painting the sky RED in post production, so much as been edited out, The fight between Superman and The League is just so Odd, The score doesnt fit the scene at all, and Superman looks like a CGI characters most times...
and The Villain My god, what a creative failure...Literally maybe the single worst villain in any CBM ever...with some of the worst CGI I've ever seen...
comparing AIW to Justice League truly isnt even fair....
I hated BvS....but after watching JL, I literally rewatched BvS again and somewhat liked it more and kinda respected it, because It was at least "A Movie"...It was Snyders baby, for better or worse, The Ultimate Cut of BvS is at least a movie that has a vision, Plan and was executed....
watching JL...You realize its really not a movie, Its a collection of scenes, made by2 different directors that dont fit, It has no vision, Heart or goal...when you make a film, You hired a composer to write music, The director and composer go over the movie, tone of the movie, each important scene, The composer writes music based off the tone of the film and specific scenes...lol Whedon changed composers, you now got a composer writing "Lighter" music for Darker scenes...The Music fits the scenes whedon added, but the problem is, 75% of the movie was Snyders, 75% of the movie has a score that doesnt fit the scenes or tone....
Its beyond anything you've ever seen....just a disaster
Thanks for the detailed analysis. Yeah, "Logan" is a favorite of mine too, except that they tacked-on one too many battles at the close (which felt redundant and play-it-safe). I didn't mention it here because it's less of a super-team flick than the three I noted.
In light of all the praise, I can't wait to see AIW.
As for BvS, I saw the Ultimate cut and the main problem I have with the film is that the first half feels like its marking time (I couldn't even finish it the first time I tried to watch it). When I eventually viewed the whole film I didn't get absorbed into the story until the second half. The first half may be gritty realistic, albeit with superheroes, but it's generally dull. Still, I appreciate that BvS has a different approach than usual and I ultimately like (don't love) it.
Kevin Feige, The Russo Brothers, James Gunn, ect. They just really get it.
My MCU Ranking would be:
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Avengers: Infinity War
Captain America: Civil War
Guardians Of The Galaxy
Thor: Ragnarok
The Avengers
Iron Man
Doctor Strange
Avengers: Age Of Ultron
Captain America: The First Avenger
Ant Man
Guardians Of The Galaxy: Volume 2
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Black Panther
Iron Man 2
Thor
Iron Man 3
Thor: The Dark World
The Incredible Hulk
They really do. I don't know if it's some system they have in place for monitoring the progress of the films, but even though the films are radically different from one another in plot, voice, tone, scale, etc., they still feel unified. And they're always good movies.
It's always hard for me to rank films, but I came up with this for a different thread the other night:
Tied for the best:
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Avengers: Infinity War
Also excellent
The Avengers
Thor: Ragnarok
Guardians of the Galaxy
Captain America: Civil War
Ant-Man
Really, really good
Black Panther
Iron Man
Iron Man 2
Thor
Doctor Strange
Good but not great, all re-watchable
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Captain America: The First Avenger
The Incredible Hulk
Thor: The Dark World
Iron Man 3
Yeah, I don't know how the system works over there, but it feels like they are all on the same page. And since Feige is the one in charge, and also very knowledgeable about the material, he is able to get together with whoever is directing, and help them craft an amazing movie that will not only make a lot money, but also satisfy the people.
And like you said, I love that all the films feel unified. You can go through all of them and they almost feel like TV episodes. And even though I rank some higher than the others, they are all rewatchable, and I can find something I like in each one of them every time.
I'd argue that Winter Soldier and Homecoming are more or less its equal, but for sheer momentum and originality its the best of the bunch. Which film do you consider better?
The Dinklage scenes were great, I thought. I loved that he looked the same as he always does, but was enormous. For once, he got to play the largest guy in the room! The theater loved it too-- it got one of the biggest laughs in the film.
I like Dark Knight a lot, but it falls apart at the end. Infinity War was consistently excellent.
Cap and Panther charging into battle was amazing, but for me, Thor's return to Earth trumped everything else in the film.
Best since TDK which wasn't really a comic book film you could say. It's just collected the biggest openings in the US and WW ever which is totally deserved imo.
Oh, okay. I thought it was something I'd not heard of, especially when you say it's not really a comic book film. Isn't Batman taking on the Joker and Two-Face the quintessential comic book film?
