Set in 1995. What 90s references should they have included?

We got Blockbuster, pagers, chunky computers, dialup and windows jokes, grunge, a few 90s tracks, Street Fighter II in the bar.

What else was needed?

I thought more curved cars were needed (they used the 80s boxy shaped cars, despite cars being curved by 95).

I would have liked the song Gangsta's Paradise used for downtown los angeles (seems to fit). Maybe a few shots of LA homeboys to match. Maybe 2pac song. That to me is the 90s, more so than grungy music. Grungy was Seattle, this is set in LA.

Also, there is a mistake, she uses Altavista Search Engine but it wasn't released until December 15, 1995. I doubt this movie was set at the end of the year and even if it were, it wasn't the search engine of choice upon release.

A small complaint.

Maybe a discman thrown in or something too.

I would've loved for some Rage Against the Machine thrown into the soundtrack. Also, I know they showed the computer loading, but I'm surprised they didn't have the dial up tone.

Were internet cafes even a thing in 1995? I certainly don´t remember them being around in Australia that early. Maybe the USA was different.

Yeah, they were around in a lot of countries starting from early 1990s. The first one according to Wikipedia was started in South Korea all the way back in 1988.

Yeah i looked it up. Looks like the first ones in Australia were in 1995. The first American one was in August 1994 in Dallas. Im still doubtful they were commonplace in LA in 1995.

My highschool in Australia got internet in 95 in the library. I always assumed Americans were a few years ahead with internet.

Mid nineties is when the internet blew up here in the states. Before that some people were using it, but they were more techy types.

Yeah I remember the net being available for Aussies in 95 just dont remember net cafes being a thing back then. There were only a couple in Australia in 95 so that makes sense.

We only see the one internet cafe in the movie, so it was never depicted as commonplace.

That would make it even more of a stretch for them to show up to the only netcafe in LA in 1995, if there even was one there.

Carol was specifically looking for one. As for whether or not they existed, I did a quick google search and found that both San Fran and Berkely had some in 1993, so it's not a stretch to assume LA had one or two by 1995.

We are talking the first public, commercial internet cafe like the one featured in the movie. The ones in San Fran did not offer full internet services as depicted in the movie. The "research" you did. lol. Congrats on being able to use google.

I'm not sure why you think it's funny that I use the internet for the purposes the internet was meant for but do you have any sources to back up your claims? I assume you didn't use the internet because that's ridiculous for some reason.

I don´t find you using the internet funny, I find you using the term "research" to describe a google search as funny. Yeah I have sources, they are on the internet, Im not going to bother posting them though since I don´t care about it all that much to go look them up again and post them to satisfy you. In any case, it only requires a minimum amount of "research" on your behalf to find out.

I did a minimum amount of research (and yes, internet searches are a form of research). California had internet cafes in 1993. I'm not sure why you're so defensive about it.

Nope, because she went missing in 1989, so they could have shown some older stuff in the flashbacks.

PS1 was lat 95 in the US.

I liked the "True Lies" Scwarzenegger cutout at the Blockbuster Video, that put a definite time stamp on the movie, and the pay phones. Some reference to the boy bands that plagued the era might have been nice, but I can understand that they only wanted to include *good* 90s music.

Me too, an interesting funfact is that NIN was still a relativity a underground band in 1995.

Maybe Trent didn't give permission to use any of his songs.

'94 was their breakthrough year. The Downward Spiral was released in March 1994 and remains their most successful record.

Aw darn I thought you had SOMETHING going for ya when I saw you posting NIN trivia, too bad your trivia was incorrect.

I agree that he probably wouldnt license any of his songs for a movie now unless he was also hired to write the score.

If I was an Oscar winning composer like Trent, thats how I would play it.
