Carol Danvers is Ms Marvel. The real Captain Marvel battled Skrulls and Thanos, and eventually succumbed to cancer courtresy of Nitro. Though presently dead, the story of the true Captain Marvel would be much more interesting.
shareI agree with you that Mar-Vell would make the more interesting story but Carol Danvers now goes by Captain Marvel so that's who they're going with.
BTW: Mar-Vell is going to be a supporting character in this film played by Jude Law.
To be fair there was more than one Captain Marvel. The guy you mention came first and then later some others. At one point Captain Marvel was an African American woman.

Quite frankly, that gives the fillmakers enough leeway to, well, make whatever the hell they want of the character. If a few comic nerds object, well, there aren't enough comic nerds who know who all the various Captain Marvel's are to make a difference at the box office.
The one at DC is now called Shazam to avoid copyright issues with Marvel.
