Two hour movie padded by 4 hours of commercials

Seriously, I timed it a few times. 5 minutes of show, 10 minutes of commercials. 5 minutes of show, 10 minutes of commercials...

So true! The UK is undeniably better in that respect, and pretty much all other respects too.

Assuming, of course, you can live with the bad food, bad weather, bad teeth, overwhelmingly and bowel-shakingly unattractive people, bad music, bad style in general, and bad gas. Oh yes, they are very gassy too, just to add insult to injury.

But aside from that rather insignificant splash of nitpicking, THE UK RULES!

You can stick to your super healthy and tasty big macs, and your lard assed super obese 'beautiful' people. lol im guessing you will say hollywood invented all those hillbilly hunks with rotted teeth deformed heads and jug ears, as those types obviously are too ugly to be one of the beautiful people of the usa. Truth is, as you have over 5 times our population, you have pretty much 5 times as many fugly people, maybe thats why most of your movies and tv series use lots of brit actors, as they dont want to scare the kids with the 'beautiful' american actors. Im gonna have a wild guess here, YOU have never been to the UK, im even gonna suppose you probably havent even been out of your state. Hick.

How does uk TV do it?

reply

Yes, and in the UK, you have the pleasure of paying a license fee to watch TV, which comes to about $215 (145.5 pounds) a year (that's on top of a cable fee if you can't get over-the-air). You're still paying, just directly with pounds instead of commercials.

well my time is worth $30 an hour, just to pick a reasonable number. If UK telly is commercial free, then i actually 'make' money on the hundreds of hours of ads i don't have to sit thru. £250 well spent, i would say

reply

I meant that they took what amounted to a two-hour movie and made it into a 6 hour miniseries, by placing four hours of commercials in it: 10 minute commercial breaks after each 5 minutes of show. Perhaps you should spend more time learning to read than fiddling with your font color.

reply

Well, next time do what the rest of us did.

DVR the show... so you watch it later on your 60" SAMSUNG... instead of streaming it in the back seat of mommy's car or at the gym on a 3"x5" phone with some goofy HULU or YUULOO or NETFLUX whatever you call it app....

You can skip over ALL the commercials. Amazing!

Guess she didn't like the cornbread either.

reply

I gave up on fowarding on my dvr very early into the series because they were so frequent. I just accepted my fate and watched it with the commercials, lol. I was going to watch It on hulu or another Internet no commercial option but I wanted to watch it immediately. Just to let you know... Not all ppl watch torrents and on small phones. They use smart tv's, video game consoles, chomcast, allcast, etc... and watch it on their large screen tv.

reply

The ability for some people to watch the show in different formats does not justify the original format in which it is presented. You can also do that most other people do and not be a condescending douche.

reply

i'm not even kidding when i say this but torrents can be your best friend. there's never a commercial included with whatever you torrent. i can't even imagine sitting through (for example) THE WALKING DEAD's 3,540 commercial for each ep!! nope.

reply

This is why SciFi shows get cancelled so often. SciFi nerds are the most likely to pirate shows, and this has killed commercial revenues for the network. The network execs said this as long ago as Stargate Atlantis. There is a very high correlation between most pirated shows on COMMERCIAL networks and declining ratings.

reply

This is why Games of Thrones is such a huge succes... because it is the most pirated show.... so .. uh huh stuff exec's say.

reply

No you moron. HBO does not make money on commercials. HBO's execs have been clear about this in interviews.

Oh that is cute, you think calling someone moron and pretending HBO is a charity make you sound smartnesser. Please explain to me how HBO makes any money if people just torrent their shows? Or is this too complicated for you?

reply

I'd say GOT (and the rest of the HBO lineup) trends older and more feminine, the groups most likely to just spend the cash. Young male nerds pretty much have to pinch every penny they can get lol, including me :(.

"what is your major malfunction numbnuts?!!"

reply

Yeah and they're the same commercials, ususally previews of new shows on Syfy, over and over and over.

reply

been like that for over 30 years of television dont know how many time we gotta tell people how commercial tv works for every hour of televison they have to run 15 minutes of commerciasl give or take the 2 hour show is normally only 90 minutes and a hour is 45 minutes.

reply

Yup, either that or get HBO / BBC.

reply

Apparently the FCC gives the advertisers/broadcasters whatever they want. They have good lobbyists. It seems that every few months they increase the commercial time/hour. There is no one to stop them. They may as well have half hour commercials per hour, or 45 minutes/hour. Why not? There's no one in our present version of representative government that cares, or that will stop them.

reply

It is why I like the BBC, netflix and HBO. Now if only someone has a paid service that combines all I can watch ???I would be happy. Don't really care much for tv and it's obnoxious presenters, worked with too many of these idiots in the past.

reply

Actually it was a 4 hour movie padded with 2 hours of commercials. I watched it with no commercials and each episode ran right at 1 hr and 20 minutes.

This is a few more minutes of commercials than average, but not much (2-5 minutes at most).A 1 hr show runs 42 to 48 minutes commercial free. That's 12-18 minutes per hour.

reply

I got the same - at least for the first episode, I didn't bother looking at 2 & 3. But 1:20 of show, 36 minutes of commercials. But that's counting the "coming up on Childhood's End" segments as show and also not counting the last commercial break (the commercials after the show is over) since nobody has to watch that.

In terms of how they split it up, I liked that as well. Opened with 19 minutes of uninterrupted show which is a nice start. Followed by about 5 minutes of commercial. Second segment was almost 13 minutes, so the show opens with about 32 minutes of content, 5 minutes of commercials. Third segment is 9 minutes, then it's shorter in the middle with a 7 and a 6 minute segment. Then wraps back up with two longer, 13 minute segments.

I think this this is a very good flow to balance the telling of the story, laying the groundwork up front & finishing strong, while still doing the necessary commercials to pay for everything.

The original poster either needs a new timer or frankly was being dishonest because it's not remotely 5 minutes of show, 10 minutes of commercial.

watch all 3 ON DEMAND-probably 15 mins of commercials total (you can't fast forward however)

Many times a 'break' would come, a fade, but then the story would continue-many ads were skipped or cut short

Sometimes a promo for a sic fi show was the only ad.
