You notice that the black audience is very selective?

Some movies they fully support, others they kinda support...then there's movies like this, that they DON'T support .

Some of the reasons are pretty obvious. One of the lead actor/actresses is of mixed race, and not considered "black". Or the actor has a real life white spouse...but yet there's instances where the actors are totally black, such as the Wayans Brothers, and their films get no support. I suspect because the supporting cast is mostly white.

There's films from Tyler Perry that WERE supported? But today are considered offensive portrayals, and avoided. Very difficult demo to get a grasp on.

I don't know whether I agree or disagree with your topic in general. There was a group of 7-8 black women in the audience at the showing I went to and they were the only ones in there laughing as hard or harder than I was at some stuff. Either way, I'm not sure why there always has to be a "race issue". Funny is funny, who cares?

Key and Peele draw diverse (young) audiences. Although most of the cast is African American, I suspect the film appeals to a wider audience.

9M opening weekend...had this movie appealed to the black audience, it would have done 20-30M opening easily.

How about a diverse audience of all ages? Most of the white Baby Boomers I know think they are great - and it was a mixed audience as to age and race in the theatre today, all enjoying it together.

It's like hearing that Bernie supporters are all millennials when I know quite a few that are in their 50s, 60s and even 80s. Enough with the stereotypes!

First show of the day.small theater, maybe 200 seats tops.
Probably 20-30 bodies.
Mixed races. White. Hispanic. Black.

This isn't Wall Street-this is Hell. We have a little something called integrity-Crowley

Okay, I see . The black audience knows that both these guys have white spouses...

Most people probably have no idea who Key and Peale are married to. They only see creative talent and enjoy laughing their heads off at a wide variety of comic portrayals.

It never occurred to me going into the theatre to wonder what the racial makeup of the audience would be.

reply

Saw the movie and not one black person in the theater

reply

Blacks and whites in my row. Didn't do a demographic on the rest as we were too busy watching the movie. You know, as human beings.

reply

Saw the movie and half the audience was black.

reply

You can say the same about the whites. There are films where the audience was filled with black folks, but the whites were nonexistent.

reply

I didn't notice the racial makeup of our audience but what did grab my attention was the lack of younger viewers. Perhaps 90% of the audience was 45+ years old, it may have just been a curious day for the demographic and mean nothing.

Ooh, a lesson in not changing history from Mr. I'm my own grandpa!

You ever notice that white people drive like this, but black people drive like this.

Maybe because "the black audience" consists of tens of millions of people in the U.S. alone who like watching different things on an individual basis? What a bizarre thread.

reply

As I have tried to point out.

My thoughts exactly

Quit stereotyping black audiences and black folks in general. Tired of everyone always trying to shove us all unto one damn box----we're just as diverse as anyone on the planet. Also, both Key & Peele are black, period. They're also biracial too, but as a black person, I could care less because I already liked their now-defunct comedy show, and I wanted o see this flick because I liked the premise and figured it would be a good spoof of JOHN WICK, a good action film which starred Keanu Reeves. And I like some Tyler Perry movies---trust me, not all black people hate his films---that's another stereotype. People harping on the above things you mentioned have issues of their own projected onto other folks, that's all. The film was good, and it did make its budget back at the box office.
