Oscar Nomination for Meryl Streep. She looks terrific in this, even though the trailer's too short...

reply

yes it is an oscar bait. Movies like these are not made for normal audiences but for the judges on the panel.

reply

Are you suggesting that audiences who watch this are not normal?

reply

What I meant is this movie is not aimed at the general audience. When you make a movie you must first draw up a plan on who the target audience will be - whether its going to be made purely for commercial purposes or something else. For example, art movies don't make much money but they are still appreciated for their artistic value. Similarly, movies such as these with high profile actors act as a bait to seduce judges...so even if the actors perform poorly the judges will have no choice but nominate them for awards. Because of the artistic value and high profile nature of the actors the panel gets compelled to grant some trophies regardless of what their performances show. But if you make a similar movie with new low profile actors it doesn't even get noticed by anyone.

Bbethany7 FFJ is an excellent film, well written. skillfully directed, and beautifully acted by Streep, Grant and Helberg, who give superb performances, all of this unusual in recent film productions. We saw the Whit Stillman movie, which put us to sleep with its attempts at wit and intelligence that fell flat.

Really?

Because I'm delighted they made a movie about Florence and have had it on my calendar to see since I saw the first trailer. Can't wait until it opens.

For those of us tired of movies based on video games and comic books, this is a refreshing oasis.

Meryl gets a nom for every movie she is in, so why not this. She and Dame Judy Dench just have to show up and they get nominated. They are talented, no doubt, but being nominated for nearly every movie is crazy. Although I love them both. I have had the pleasure of meeting both women, and they are exceptions to the rule about "never meeting your heroes." I guess it was because I didn't expect to be amazed by them in person, that their true personalities came out. The few times I have been around Meryl Streep, she has made me laugh over nothing significant (once was actually over how hungry she was and wanting two of everything she saw other enjoying). Dame Judy is a living legend who acts like she doesn't know it. I got some great advice from the woman about helping my mother who had the beginnings of Macular Degeneration. Sadly Judy has both types of the degenerative eye issue, one in each eye, yet doesn't let that stop her - an inspiration considering she can't see the center field of vision, or read anymore. She has someone read her scripts to her, and learns her parts that way (during the past few years). She can no longer see the faces of those she looks at directly, but can see you by using her periphery. Those who don't know of her illness might think she is not interested in them, but the opposite is true - looking by not looking is her way of wanting to know you. As a person that has prosopagnosia (commonly called face blindness), faces are nothing to me - I can't even describe myself except in parts of the whole. She helped me realize that it didn't matter, that what I had been doing to know people (listening for familiar voice patterns or looking at body movement) actually made me know them better.
Meryl and Judy, two fabulous women, who show their true mettle on and off screen.

God, I didn't know that Judy Dench had macular degeneration. She manages to hide that well, in films as well as interviews. How sad that it's not yet curable.

And thanks for sharing your history with prosopagnosia. It is inspiring. 👍

I don't think she'll be nominated. I've just got back from seeing the film; it's too slight, too simple, the writing is perfunctory. Her character doesn't really change, the big "Oscar bait" moment feels like a huge cliché, and although there's nothing wrong with her performance the character isn't interesting enough.

Hugh Grant did a good job, but again his role is too simple. For the most part he's the driving force of the film, Jenkins just reacts. Overall it felt empty, as if a more interesting film had been ripped out at some point in development.

reply

I realise it will not be released in US until August (bang in the middle of the Olympics), but basing Oscar nominations on trailers seems a bit presumptuous.

Having seen the film last night all I will say is that it's OK. Interesting and amusing, but by no means life-changing or hilarious.

The film feels small and slight (made on a shoestring budget by the look of it, with a couple of streets in Liverpool filling in for Manhattan) and many familiar faces from British telly putting on earnest American accents in the lesser roles.

If anything Hugh Grant puts in the best performance from the main players. A musical/comedy Golden Globe nod for him and that's about it, I bet.

The Academy loves Streep. Of course she will get a nomination.

reply

I much, much admire her as an actress...she can do anything! But I find it makes me weary that she's nominated for almost every movie she's in. Ok to give someone else a chance. I did not love Florence Foster Jenkins; hubby did. I thought Simon Helberg, with his finely nuanced performance, more notable than the leads. Also, find her choices of Rickie and now this rather questionable when she is capable of so much more.
