What did she throw into the river?

The ending was so rushed I didn't catch it.

When we found out who did the tossing, I speculated at the time that it was meant to be the cat, though I also thought that the loud 'kersploozh!' sounded more like a very big rock. Still, I think it was intended to be the cat.

After going through the comments I've come to the conclusion that it was clearly the cat thrown into the river.
Theresa obviously hated it and blamed it for the death of her own child.
To address the case of them getting caught quickly...
Remember at the start, when they go to the downstairs apartment after the ocuple losing their baby, They say, "What do you think happened?" and theresa goes "I gave birth"
So...possible birth records there? And they just keep the death record hidden for ever.
Voila. Case closed.

The throwing of "something" in the river was of course meant to be all show for witnesses, to think that Kate threw the baby in the river. But then what actually was thrown in the river had to be something that could not actually be found or identified, otherwise the ruse would be revealed. Therefore it can't be the cat (where's the baby?). The milk bottle would also be a bad choice (why is there a milk bottle here, with drug residues?) The best would be a poorly wrapped stone or brick, so the stone would break free and be unidentifiable and there would always be the question of the baby being not found (carried away by the current).
