I liked her character. She could have gotten away if she wanted to. Niska ninja'd her way out of that police controlled facility when they had her captured I'm sure Karen could have just picked up the boy and ran through everyone and gotten out of there.
ps, in the preceding episode she froze and temporarily locked up because she couldn't run into the street to save the boy (against her hardwiring) I'm not sure how she can suddenly sacrifice herself for the safety of the child. Maybe they'll explain that but unless they do explain it they've contradicted themselves. Either she can ignore her programming or she can't. Which is it?
She sorta did, but it was more like finding a workaround because the situation was a lot more complex than jumping herself into traffic. She was able to chain together a series of permissible actions before her override or whatever kicked in. It's a fairly common problem in cybersecurity- the programmer is responsible for an infinite number of scenarios in which a system could be compromised, but an adversary only needs to find 1 way through.
Makes me question the direction the story is taking. I enjoyed watching her and the boy despite the apprehension. They also never addressed the fact that the boy would never grow up which would soon become a problem for Karen's plan. Easy way out the creators chose.
Yes, I've thought about that too. Not from Karen's angle but from having a real child actor, who will grow up, play a child robot who can't grow. I've figured this will be the little boys only season. His character will leave or die but he can't continue on the show because he'll be bigger in real life and no longer fit the character he's playing. That's another reason I wish Karen were still around. He's a more expendable character to me than she is.
Karen getting beaten to death was very painful to watch.
Originally, we had Leo (a hybrid), Nia, Max, Karen, Fred, Niska. Now Fred and Karen are gone, and I've felt it each time one of the original synths to whom we were introduced is killed. That being said, the writers have the guts to part with favorite characters, and I have to applaud that.
I remember that Karen was modeled on Leo Elster's mother, but I don't remember why she was not in contact with the rest of the original six. The others all seemed to be working together, but Karen was apart from them trying to find her own way. Sad to see her go.
