Do you think we'll ever get more Twin Peaks?

I've loved Twin Peaks for a long time, including most of David Lynch's stuff. Season 1 and 2 of Twin Peaks were my favorite, while I thought Fire Walk With Me and season 3 were okay. With how season 3 ended, I really hoped that maybe, just maybe we would get one last thing from Twin Peaks in film form, like one more movie or mini series. I know there are the books, but it would be cool to see more on the screen.

I know it's probably unlikely to happen, but what do you think? I thought I read David Lynch was making something new in the last few years, but maybe that wasn't related to Twin Peaks or got canceled. Plus he's getting pretty old now.

You can rewatch as much as you like. But try something different once in a while.

By most accounts Lynch was funded by Netflix for a project that was subsequently derailed by the pandemic (Netflix revenues fell and thus various projects were cancelled).

The project was to be named Wisteria, Unrecorded Night, or perhaps something else. My guess is that it would be been in the Twin Peak's universe without being part 4 of Twin Peaks specifically. But we may never know.

I have a sneaking suspicion that Lynch is still working on something, but whether or not it's the same thing as the project that would have appeared on Netflix is anyone's guess.

Not happening. The Showtime season was a joke and a disgrace—except to masochists.

Recent question-and-answer sessions with Sabrina Sutherland informed us that Unrecorded Night (aka Wisteria) was indeed going to air on Netflix until the pandemic derailed the project. She also stated that UN was NOT Twin Peaks (season 4).

Throughout that rumor period my guess was that UN wouldn't be TP's per se, but the world that was introduced to us in the last episode of S3. It would be a continuing story involving Dale (Richard?) and Carrie Page (Laura?). Familiar TP's faces would populate the series with different roles, etc. Sabrina didn't necessarily squelch that idea so it's hard to say. Hopefully UN will see the light of day eventually, she alluded that it might.

Last thing. About TP's S4, many have suggested that far too much of the cast has passed on at this point and it wouldn't be possible.

I beg to differ.

Here is the current list (at the time of this post) of people we DO have and suffice it to say it's more than enough to contine the ongoing story of TP's (and I'm not even including the new characters introduced in S3), I'll name them by their character names: Agent Cooper, Gordon Cole, Laura Palmer, Leland Palmer, Sarah Palmer, Dr. Jacoby, Ben Horne, Jerry Horne, Audrey Horne, Sylvia Horne, Andy Brennan, Lucy Brennan, Shelly Johnson, Bobby Briggs, Betty Briggs, Hawk, The Giant, Big Ed, Nadine, James Hurley, Leo Johnson, Mike Nelson, Annie Blackburn, Ronette Pulaski, Denise Bryson, Chet Desmond. With outside chances: Sherriff Truman, Donna Heyward, The MFAP.

Nah, it’s done. Season 4 was Lynch’s magnum opus, bringing back many cast and crew from his career, plus it ended perfectly.

He’s nearly 80 now, his composer Angelo Badalamenti has died, much of the cast have died. He’s not going to resurrect Twin Peaks.

I doubt he would even make something ‘Twin Peaks adjacent’, he’s got one, maybe two, film projects left if we’re lucky and I suspect they’ll be smaller scale experimental pieces.

I wouldn't rule out a Season 4 in absolute terms, though I agree with anyone who says it's unlikely. After Season 3 Lynch -- when asked about a S4 -- merely replied that people would have to be patient since S3 took him five years to write. The implication being that it would take him as long to write another season.

Well, it's been 7 years since S3 was gifted to us. The lockdown during the pandemic may have afforded him even more time to write a S4 given his stationary status, thus expediting the process. He did tell some students at the time in an interview were it not for the lockdown he would be working on a "continuing story." Most likely that would be in reference to TP's one would imagine.

My own feelings is that the S3 ending works perfectly as an ending, but that it simultaneously works as a fantastic cliffhanger begging for a continuation.

So a S4 would be great.

And no S4 would not tarnish the series one bit.

I'm good either way, but given the choice how could I not want more? I'd take it in a heartbeat.

The project that Lynch was working on until lockdown killed it was Unrecorded Night, which had nothing to do with Twin Peaks. There is a small chance that UN could be resurrected.

We know now that UN is not related to TP's according to Sabrina. We also know, courtesy of Sabrina, that Lynch has ideas for another season of TP's. She wasn't sure about Frost but I think it's safe to say he has ideas as well (he wrote two books sandwiching S3 after all).

A fourth season is unlikely, I think mostly, due to a lack of interest in financing the endeavor. You mention Lynch's age as a deterrent, but Martin Scorsese is 81 I believe and still directing while Lynch is 78. As far as we know Lynch is in good health so I don't see that as a problem, assuming Lynch has the interest and financing.

Angelo Badalamenti has passed, yes. But the music for TP's is already established and it's not as though supplemental music, if needed, could not be composed by someone else.

Lastly, you say "much of the cast has died," and while some have, I gave a list previously of those that we still have with us and that's more than enough to continue. Not to mention, there are ways around the actors that have passed, such as Major Briggs and BOB conjured images. And if the actor that plays any given character becomes a problem Lynch can turn them into a tree if needed . . .

Yeah but when you roll all those factors, and the others I mentioned, together it collectively points to no more Twin Peaks.

Lynch took 15 years between Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire, he ain’t a relentless film-factory like Scorsese. The most we’ll get out of Lynch now is a couple of experimental film-based projects if we’re lucky.

Lynch hasn't ruled out a 4th season and even has some ideas for it according to this article - https://www.worldofreel.com/blog/2024/5/3/lynch

I would hope so. But doubt it. I am finally finishing season three and it seems to me that they wasted a lot of time on Cooper being a moron then anything else. They crammed more in the first 18 episodes of the original series then what I'm seeing with season 3. I have 10 more episodes to go and Cooper is still walking around like a zombie. I did hear the ending was a disappointment for many. I think they originally thought they were going to get a second season. They have now said they are happy with the way things ended in season three so I highly doubt Lynch will do more. At least we got to revisit some characters again....

reply

No. I think he pretty much said it was done.

I’m ok with where he left it. Cooper is obsessed with Laura and now chases her through different realities.
