A sit com with no com.

I don't dislike this programme at all but I can't remember laughing once. It's a nice gentle show which does make you smile but as for laughs there are none.

It says a lot about BBC comedy these days when their number one sit com isn't in any way amusing.

True it is not laugh out loud funny .. it also is not a barrage of jokes , it is very subtle .. But I really enjoy the show .. most of my laughs come from Becky teasing Andy ..

For those people that keep saying "Really", Really!!!

Agreed not a belly clutching laugh out loud comedy but still really really really good, no really.

My wife and I have sat through the first episode over three days, a record for me to speed watch anything!

Very English, very subtle and no soundtrack telling you when to laugh!

This show is amazing & hilarious! The subtlety & genius is just over some people's heads.

Friends, Blackadder, Vicar of Dibley and Porridge are all sit-coms with no com if you just don't get it. My wife thinks "Blackadder" is the most laugh free programme she has ever had to endure but found Phoenix Nights an absolute hoot!

I am at the beginning of Series 02. I can't believe I missed this in it's entire broadcast run....Loving it.

Now that is funny and relevant to metal detecting. the perfect riposte.

I see what you did there....

"This is like the worst ever episode of Scooby Doo." Though I had laughed out loud a few times, this line is the one that made me start over at episode one to see what I might have missed.

The smiles I've gotten from this show are more meaningful to me than belly laughs from a more in-your-face comedy. I enjoy the more subtle humor of Detectorists.

But some scenes are laugh-out-loud funny. Remember when Russell and Hugh went to the mayor's house after finding his chain of office:

Hugh: I can't get the image of the mayor out of my head in the woods.
Russell: I know, try not to think about it. Try to imagine him fully clothed.

And then the mayor answers the door in his underwear?

If you prefer more glaring humor, about 95% of the comedy shows on TV should serve you well. That's what I'm stuck with in the US. And that's why I spend more time watching Acorn videos than broadcast TV.

Are people genuinely confused by the subjective nature of humour and comedy?
If you're not amused nothing anyone writes here is suddenly going to flick a 'ahhhh, now I get' switch in your head and change that. And, of course, the reverse is also true.

reply

This show doesn't fall in the definition of sitcom. Usually they're multi-camera and on a small number of sets. This is a one camera comedy/drama.

reply

"I can't stand up."
"Yes you can. I've seen you."

Have you tried turning it off and on again?
