8.4 out of 10? Remember, this just my opinion. I know this is supposed to be a Sci Fi Comedy... but this show is more of "retarded" then "funny". Actually, I don't find it funny at all. The police, FBI or military "agents" are so dumb that it isn't even funny. The story is a mess and all the main characters are weird and uninteresting. I honestly don't get all the hype and high score. I love comedy shows, but this is a disgrace.
I don't know, seems about on par with how funny the fourth and fifth books were in the Hitchhikers trilogy...
(haven't read these, but enjoyed the series after the first few eps. did the ground work, they were pretty "meh" on their own though and only really paid off as a season on it's own imho)
You are indeed entitled to your own opinion, but to that of the dead? ... oh maybe you can communicate with the beyond? In that case go sign up with the Agency, you're awesome!
No, the show is utter bollocks. Nothing like Douglas Adams' Dirk Gently, none of the humour or references and none of the detective work or way of solving cases. I tried not to think of this as Dirk Gently and go with it to enjoy it but, and this is a largish but, this show is utter *beep* And no, I do not think this because it is "too British" in fact, this is not British at all. I have pairs of socks which outbritish this show and are far wittier. this is Max Landis trying to be more clever than he is and a weird American view on how English people are.
I feel sorry for Elijah Wood having to do these things and the sooner this show ends the better for him.
I feel sorry for the three hours of my life I wasted on this show. That is how bad it is. I haven't reviewed or rated anything in many years. I had to log back in to rate this due to how I am disappointed in this.

LOL! Firstly: Wood chose to do this. He wasn't interested in doing another series due to their time demands but then eagerly jumped on board after reading the script and researching the project; he says, like "Wilfred" (also well received), its precisely the role he wants to play, more so if it distances him further from his Hobbit role.
Secondly: The show is doing well and was green-lit for a second season early due its reception, which is majorly positive from critics albeit the few harsh ones. It's not geared to a wide audience but it found its niche viewers and they found it and all are happy except the people who can't accept that others like it because they themselves couldn't connect with it. And yes, it's not exactly Adam's Dirk, but once you accept that it's merely "based on", the series has plenty of merit on its own.
Please consider that maybe you are too stuck in your Adams-perfect expectations or some weird Elijah Wood idolatry or that maybe the show is just not for you. I never got "Dr. Who", for example. I've never been able to watch a complete episode and don't care to do it. But it has fans! So, rather than rating it as crap and telling everyone that the whole production crew should lose their jobs, fans should lose their show, and the stars would be better off acting only in things I like, I realize that I'm simply not its audience and therefore not qualified to have any meaningful opinion on it beyond: I don't like Dr. Who; it doesn't speak to me in any way.
That said, still think you should act like such an expert and be imposing career choices on anyone?
Ignorance is bliss... 'til it posts on the Internet, then, it's annoying.

Thanks. Indeed. Not the kind stuff I normally watch, but ep. 1 sucked me in and the show was able to keep my interest despite the lull mid season (which was necessary and still good storytelling when considering the season as a whole), but this elevated the last few episodes to truly great when it all came together.

I had a similar feeling watching the first episode (only, so far).
Douglas Adams surely has his own special brand of humor, but the acting was more like "whimsical-finical", in a bad way, instead of quirky-funny. I don't mind that nothing really makes sense in a first episode, that's why it's a series, but the two things I can't get over are the weird acting and the horrible music.
It seemed like the show is a pastiche of a Douglas-Adams-based show, made by not-the-first-choice people. It felt somehow desperate - wanting to be a certain kind of show without ever fully being it. But well, I only saw one episode, it could get great.
Honestly, I wasn't sure I liked the show after the first episode. But, somewhere in the middle I started caring for the characters and by the end, I'm really looking forward to Season 2.

This is imdb, any show with a respectful amount of budget and advertising to gather a fan base will provide high rates like that. If you want real, reliable rates you are looking in the wrong place. Metacritic: 62, Rotten Tomatoes: 6.54
