Deep dive Into the Bad - this series is for dummies

I had high expectations for the show, due to the 8+ IMDB rating, but boy was I wrong. While the martial arts sections sure look pretty, it's not enough to carry the series anywhere as absolutely nothing else makes no sense. The show feels like a weird dream - no matter how illogical it is, it just continues on.

There are no motives, there's no history. There's no depth to the characters and no explanation why things are as they are.

Why aren't there firearms? They were banned? What? By who? Why? Why do people obey? What do the people eat as the fields we've shown are either poppy or "oil" as once mentioned? Why are there barons? Why do people follow the barons? Why are some people living outside of the reach of the barons and some are basically work slaves (cogs)? Why aren't the strongest of the clippers challenging the barons, if it's survival of the fittest and strongest?

It's hard to even describe how seriously *beep* up the show is. You could literally write hundreds of questions that aren't explained in any manner. These questions aren't something you could just "let go". Nothing feels natural, but instead it's pressed and forced.

On top of all the issues, there's a mystical aspect going on, with hidden "dark powers" and mystical city of Asra (or something similar), whom no one seems to know anything about, yeta day's drive away you can find a hidden monastery of sorts with monks that know how to contain that. What?! Why aren't the barons raiding left and right? Why do the clippers follow orders blindly?

Really, just skip this show. Your time is much better spent with eg. Marco Polo, first couple seasons of Battlestar Galactica or the new The Expanse.

I'm not sure if you like reading sci-fi, especially stuff closer to Space Opera genre, but it's kind of a staple of sci-fi to have a huge backstory and either slowly fill in the blanks, or never really do it, and you have to piece it together yourself if you want to.

Just a small example, but I LOVE the Takeshi Kovacs novels by Richard Morgan; in the first book one of the characters casually mentions she was named after the lead scientist that first translated whale language, what is known as Understanding Day.

So whales and humans can talk to each other, to what extent? what did this do to society? how did it happen? No idea, it's mentioned for about 2 sentences in the first book and never brought up again. Science fiction loves doing stuff like that.

So, why aren't there firearms? The Barons banned them at some point long in the past. People obeyed the Barons in this, and everything else, because these were people who probably took power by banding together with strong and ruthless people and carved a niche for themselves with violence and coercion. The cogs work as slaves because the alternative is trying to escape the Clippers, who will kill them, and even if they do escape they now have to try and fend for themselves in the wilderness. Why do the Clippers listen to the Barons? Because they get beneficial treatment and perks for being Clippers. Why don't the Clippers rise up and attack the Barons if the society is based on power? THEY DO! That's the backstory of the main Baron we're following, he was the head Clipper and he killed his Baron and took over his land and people, thus becoming the new Baron.

If you think there aren't at least as many (and a lot more since it had more time) plotholes/questions in BSG you are crazy. They literally just made that show up as they went along. I loved it for the most part, but it was often cheesy and non-sensical because they randomly decided to take a path in the story they had never prepared for, hinted at, or known about until it just happened.

Anyway, this cake is great. It's so delicious and moist.

You are right on some parts... It's OK leave questions open, adds to the lore and makes things subtle. Star Wars PRE/ORIG did this a lot, LOTR as well.
The problem with Into the Badlands it is just poor writing, it's just not belivieble, the world they created does'nt feel alive. It's a pity really, the IDEA is very very good... The atmosphere of this strange world could be awesome, but sadly its not.

Haven't seen the show yet, but plan to. All I can say is this,

A person isn't dumb if they enjoy dumb entertainment while realizing it's dumb.
A person is dumb if they enjoy dumb entertainment while insisting it's smart.
There's plenty of trashy and terrible movies I enjoy, but my capacity to enjoy something isn't exclusively tied to my intelligence.

Some things only function on the level of a music video, all flash and visuals.
You seem to automatically think that makes it 'for dumb people', when in reality it takes a much more intelligent mind to appreciate style in the absence of substance. To notice excellent cinematography despite a wayward plot, or to appreciate some stunning color grading despite some bad acting. Does this excuse bad writing? No. But you're way too closeminded about this stuff.

You're absolutely correct there.

Then again it's always the easiest to provocate people with black and white opinions, even though world is everything else.

Yet, I couldn't recommend the series to anyone.

You're right, I started watching E01 and stopped, initial settings seems stupid: not only firearms are "banned", but it seems that bows, crossbows and javelins too, so that one martial arts specialist can destroy any number of men who are not martial arts specialists.
