This Show is So Badass

The fight scene with the Widow was awesome! Same with Sunny, he's a badass. I wasn't surprised when later I found out they have the fight choreographer from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - the action sequences here are the best on TV possibly ever. This show reminds me of Sin City mixed with The Matrix but set in Southern plantation-like backgrounds.

It took me awhile but I figured out where I saw the MK actor from - I think he played Bean in Ender's Game.

Anyways so far I really like the show. It's still pretty mysterious, I look forward to learning the rest of he universe:
- What else is beyond these 2 Baron lands
- Why does the widow want to find the kid
- More about this mysterious land linking Sunny and MK
- What event will set off MK, revealing his hidden identity to the widow
- What Ryder will do once he finds out about his dad
- Why did the Baron's main wife not rat out Sunny?
- What else will Sunny do to break free from his house slave status

.

I think the show has great fight scenes.

I'm thinking Shakespearean, and Ryder has been making the moves to grab power from dad. Might be something added to the smokes. Whether he is acting alone, in concert with mom, or working with his dad's new girl, it's much ado about power.

Should be very interesting. The mother is clearly plotting something. The fact she saw Sunny before and didn't say anything, I'm curious how she will use this information especially now that the kid came back

reply

I agree, the show is really badass (starting from the main character Sunny, to Quinn and the Widow, all very badass characters).

I'm also curious to know about the other Barons.

M.K.'s narration when Episode 1 began was ".......barons, seven men and women who forged order out of chaos".

So far we have the following barons:

Quinn
The Badlands' preeminent Baron.
Baronial symbol: an armadillo shown in white on a maroon banner
Territory produces: poppy flowers, which are harvested for opium.

Minerva / The Widow
Badlands' newest Baron. Wife of a previous Baron.
Baronial symbol: a blue-winged butterfly, shown in yellow on a light blue banner
Territory produces: oil fields which manufactures crude oil.

Jacobee
One of the Barons. Mentioned by Lydia. Attended Quinn and Lydia's wedding.
Baronial symbol: ??? (currently unknown)
Territory produces: ??? (currently unknown)

That leaves 4 other Barons (though we don't really know anything get about Jacobee, since he's yet to make an appearance).

Good post. Yes the universe seems huge. We don't even know how big each Baron land is

Badlands' newest Baron. Wife of a previous Baron.
Baronial symbol: a blue-winged butterfly, shown in yellow on a light blue banner

Jacobee Actor: Edi Gathegi

Other factions:

River King Actor: Lance E. Nichols
Not a baron, but is powerful for Barons to respect him enough to get his blessing to move goods and people up and down the river. He controls everything which moves through the river.

Nice. It's a huge universe. Like a Southern Plantation version of Game of Thrones.

reply

Haha, yeah.

Would be nice to have a one big map (Like Game of Thrones map) of the Into the Badlands Universe (which would consist of Badlands, with 7 barons' territories, river area showing River king's territory, the desert/wasteland between the Badlands and outside world, and Azra, Sunny and M.K.'s homeland).

I hope AMC comes up with that someday (soon). :)

i'm really enjoying the show a lot thus far too! i was surprised when i first came on this board to see (it seems) the majority of comments/threads are not positive towards the show. oh well we all like different things. :)

reply

Agreed. I'm really enjoying it so far. My speculation continues on how they'll proceed too. Like let's assume there will be a season two, will the story be about Sunny leaving the Badlands? If so, are we looking at an all relatively new cast with some of the older cast chasing after Sunny and Co?

I've described this show as having a Kung Fu Wizard of Oz feel to it and the scenery and environments really make me feel that way. Like I want to know what is out there beyond those lands.

Just cool and badass describe it well. The fight scenes are so awesome. I don't think it's trying to be anything it's not either. It's linear and action packed, and a bit high octane, and I like that about it.

Madness is like gravity...

Roark_0009,

You comment nailed why I like this show so much:

This show reminds me of Sin City mixed with The Matrix but set in Southern plantation-like backgrounds.

I love the costumes and the scenery. The show still has a futuristic feel set in a desolate, rural-like setting. When I saw the first episode my thought was, "Wow...shades of the Matrix."

Daniel Wu is the fight choreographer. He was suppose to be just that but they thought he was better as sunny as well.

reply

He's a huge star back in Asia. Raised in California

reply

Actually, while Daniel is the main character and the Producer of this show (originally, he was just supposed to be the producer, but they wanted him to be Sunny as well so...), he is not in charge of the fight choreography. Those responsibilities belong to these two gentlemen:

* Stephen Fung (Daniel's frequent collaborator in many of his projects):
- Action Unit Director of the Badlands

* Huan-Chiu Ku (also known as Dee Dee Ku, or simply master Dee Dee. Responsible for fight choreography for many famous martial arts films):
- Martial Arts Coordinator of the Badlands

OK , so the show not announcing renewal yet is starting to piss me off
