Thandie Newton's daughter was so bad in this film, it took the whole film down. The monotone delivery of her lines, non existing facial expressions. She didn't feel like a real character, and ended up being very annoying.
The real question is, Why didn't Tim Burton correct this?
It was odd.

That kid sucked all the potential joy from this movie. Just an effing train wreck, that girl. Didn’t know it was the talentless hack Thandie Newton’s daughter. Sucking at acting obviously runs in the family.
That girl singlehandedly ruined this movie. Eva Green didn’t help but it would have been fine without that girl. What a disaster.
It’s not all the child actors in the movie. The little boy brought a little bit of life to the movie. Thandie Newton Jr. just sucked the life out of every scene she was in.
How did Tim Burton find people like Anna Sophia Robb and Freddie Highmore and now find terrible actors like this? She ruined what should have been an enjoyable movie.
Looked to me she was doing a full on mini-me version of Angelina Jolie in "The Tourist".
