Seriously? 10 year olds?
It seems kinda odd for this film is about ten year olds stealing a cop car. I think it would be more realistic if these kids were teenagers. It's gonna be dark watching Kevin Bacon threaten little kids with a gun.

shareIt was a 7 year old that stole his grandmothers truck a few years back and took it joyriding. He called it "Hoodrat stuff" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ifxlv5cldM
A few years later a 9 year did the same thing http://www.wisn.com/news/9yearold-steals-car-for-drive-to-grandmas-authorities-say/26505078
The plot pretty much relies on these kids being younger, and less equipped mentally to deal with the consequences of their actions. Do they do some stupid stuff? Of course, but not because they're dumb, as so many have pointed out, but because they're naive. They simply don't know any better. I'm flummoxed by a lot of the comments in this thread saying it isn't realistic that they're running away (this is totally the age kids threaten to, or actually, do this!) or pointing the guns at their own faces (I've seen videos of ADULTS doing this). Are they the sharpest tools in the shed? By no means, but nothing they did felt like a it was beyond the realm of possibility.

Actually, that is EXACTLY one of the videos I was thinking of.
