Effing Amanda

I'm only in series 1 but from the start I have frakkin' HATED Amanda. Even in the first scene - the way she tricked Sydney - made me rage and she's not done anything redeemable since.

I get the sense she doesn't get any better. Ugh she's horrible. Can't for the life of me see why Sydney puts up with her sh!t.

and she's ugly to boot...the german girl hildegard is far prettier but sydney blew it...he has too many shaky issues

reply

Interesting.

I can not stand Amanda! She could of had Sydney, but she toyed with him and married Guy...now she is toying with him again

reply

How could she have Sydney if he never asked her to be his or to marry him? She's supposed to wait around for him forever with no guarantee that he would eventually man up and claim his own happiness? Sydney is as much to blame for his situation because he chickened out when it mattered.

reply

"Could have," not "could of."

Uch, I know. It seems like her father would not have allowed her to marry the Vicar anyway, but jeez, the way she continues to toy with him. Sidney did not feel worthy, and I think ultimately she would not want to live without money. So all of this continued tension between them seems so pointless. And when she asked him to marry her and her fiance ... that just seemed masochistic/sadistic. Totally over this story line and I'm only on episode six.

Yes she's one of those characters the showrunners and writers like but most fans don't.

I would actually prefer less about Sidney's love life and more about the mysteries, his interaction other characters and the others characters in general.

I didn't dislike her at first, but by the end of episode 3 in season 1, I was ready to strangle her. When she asked Sidney to perform the wedding, she went so far over into being sadistic that she was basically irretrievable for me.

I have a question. In 1953 England, could a father legally prevent his daughter from marrying? I assume that by then he could not force his daughter to marry or not marry whomever. So, doesn't Amanda share the responsibility for her own choices? She wanted financial security and position. That's fine, but for her to then come around and keep torturing Sidney is mean and selfish. She needs to just go away and leave him in peace so that he might finally find a woman to love and who loves him as an equal.

While I don't really get why she married the other guy in the first place (I assume that her father pushed her into it, but still), I will be the first one here to defend Sydney and Amanda. It is a couple with their problems, sure, But I really find them cute together.

reply

I blame Sidney more. Why does he continue to allow her to exploit him over and over again? Very stupid of him.
