John Dorie needs his own spin off, i could watch just him by himself every episode. Loved tonight's episode so much, it wasn't action packed or anything but the entire episode felt very relaxing to me, Garret Dillahunt is such a great actor and this character might be my favorite character of both shows.
I didn't need over the top goofy action like fighting Walkers in a water park to be entertained, just great acting and good story telling, and thats what tonight's episode was.
I 100% agree. Tonight's episode was for adults....who appreciate more than just cartoon violence. Adults who appreciate character development and good storytelling. And the acting was great--especially Dillahunt. He is fantastic. Why isn't he a bigger star by now? I have just become a big fan.
Yeah Dillahunt is an amazing actor, i remember i first saw him in The Last House On The Left remake where he played the lead bad guy, funny enough Aaron Paul played his brother in that.
And yeah the character development was great, after this episode everyone should be really invested in John. Now more than ever i want Laura/Naomi to be alive so they can reunite, they're already imo the best love story out of both Fear and Walking Dead.
He is a star, he just mainly does character or supporting roles. He's the kind of actor who gets parts written especially for him. His character on Deadwood got killed off to early, they liked him so much they wrote an entirely new character and he went back on the show. When TWD was casting for Negan, he did a thing on instagram where he had a leather jacket and I think he did some lines from the comics. Then he talked about how he was a fan of the show, so I wouldn't be surprised if they wrote John Dorie just for him.
I don't see how anyone couldn't like John, he's a bad ass, he's the nicest guy in the world, nearly everyone i've seen talk about the show loves him. To me he's already more engaging than interesting than anyone from Fear.
And the episode is gonna be one those episodes where the fans that need action and crazy stuff happening are gonna hate it. If you can appreciate good storytelling, great acting and genuinely great character development you should love this episode.
I found the insight into John's life prior to meeting Morgan really interesting, it was cool seeing him coping being by himself, playing scrabble by himself, i loved the cool mote he dug around his house. And i loved him and Laura's love story, it was built up really well. And now i care even more about Laura/Naomi when i didn't before this episode.
But yeah if you need to see guts being ripped out and crazy cartoony situations at a water park or massive explosions every 2 seconds this episode isn't gonna be for you.
I don't need non stop action or anything. Just an interesting plot. I found myself bored watching this because nothing of significance happened. It was just 2 people talking in a cabin.
As for John I just can't connect with him. He has the personality of a peanut. I don't get the fascination. They need to give him more interesting character traits.
Finding out how John and Naomi/Laura met and fell in love is a interesting plot. So many significant things happened during this episode. You found out how they met, found out more about both of their past lives, saw them work together, saw her let her guard down and allow herself to get comfortable with John. It was a fantastic episode. I loved it!
They didn't need to dedicate an entire episode to it. They could have shown this in 15 minutes through flashbacks while continuing to move the plot in the present time. Theres too much time wasted on this show.
We needed this episode, cause before it all we knew was John was looking for a woman he loved, we had never seen them together or grew close with them so no one had any emotional connection to him looking for some woman we never seen before. It was just oh he's looking for some woman, alright i guess.
This episode has made so many more people feel connected to those characters now, they wanna see him find Naomi/Laura more than ever cause we spent all that time in the episode with them watching them get closer.
And i'm glad it wasn't just threw in there in a few flashbacks going back and forth between present and past, that formula is starting to annoy me, so it was good to finally get an episode that stayed in one timeline for most of the episode up until the very end.
Until now, I had thought, "Why in the hell is he so bent out of shape about finding a woman whose real name he didn't even know? Is he a nut-job weirdo? Some post-apocalyptic stalker?" Now we see why. He's a totally normal, albeit simple, small-town man who has been through periods of extreme loneliness both before and after everything went to hell. He finally finds someone, and develops a genuine bond with them. Absolute real love, in his eyes, despite not knowing her actual name. And those Scrabble pieces in the tin... heartbreaking (and damn good writing). We find out what caused his pre-apocalypse loneliness and why he is such a great shot. He continues to shop and rent movies weekly (even signing the sign-out sheet lol) instead of just taking it all. I guess it's all in one's subjective perception. He's now the most interesting character, with the most interesting character traits, on either show, to me. "The personality of a peanut" to some, is a simple, peaceful, kind, generous, unassuming hero to others. Not sure if you have or haven't been, but being alone for long periods of time has made John (and the way they covered his backstory) very relatable to me.
How could one not pull for this simple, modest good guy?
I mean I don't hate the guy I just find him boring. I don't think we needed an entire episode dedicated to him. A few flashbacks would have been enough.
I so agree gregg. He is so annoying and totally uninteresting. I just WAS NOT going to watch this bottle episode. I could care less about him and his love life. Boring ass sh*t.
There's something very cool about this guy. Just a simple, quiet soul, yet a complete badass at the same time. Most people in the ZA become a primal version of themselves, kill or be killed. But John seems truly decent to his core. Great actor....great episode. A nice departure from the typical stuff, which is more and more becoming...typical.
Yeah it was the first episode this season I just didn't enjoy. They should have established him as a character first and THEN give us a flashback episode if it was necessary. We've known him for 4 episodes. Not even Negan got his own episode yet and hes been around 2 seasons in TWD. (Yeah I know its a different show but the point still stands).
So far I like this soft reboot better than any previous season or anything from the past three seasons of TWD.
Also I think that they did strike gold with John Dorie and I already like him miles better than any other FTWD character (I'm glad they are killing off the Clarks) and, at this point, probably TWD's too.
Agreed, and it felt like a self-contained story. Honestly I'm liking this better than the original show anymore I think. It's not all about setting up huge human villains.
