Anyone have suggestions as to a similar cartoon?

I'm having Over the Garden Wall withdrawal symptoms. I like animation of all sorts, but I'm not looking for anime. Does anyone know any show/movie that's similar to this in terms of concept, storytelling, and aesthetic? I also like the films by Sylvain Chomet and think his work falls along a similar line of eccentricity.

I love this show. It's funny, but with a conclusive and emotional story. I'm looking for something like that.

Try Hedgehog in the Fog - Yozhik v tumane (1975)

There is even a referance http://owlyjules.tumblr.com/post/102022489487/little-animation-tribute -to-yuriy-norshteyn-in to it in several epesodes

Just because no one mentioned it,

The Triplets of Belleville

has a somewhat similar aesthetic style of animation, a dated period feel, silent with a compelling musical score.

I think no one's mentioned it because I already said I'm a fan of Sylvain Chomet in the original post. Then again, I'm not too sure very many people on this board have seen his movies, so I'm probably wrong.

BUT YES! I loved Triplets. The Illusionist a little bit more. People keep comparing OTGW to Hayao Miyazaki and it's gotten kind of annoying because that seems to be the only comparison they're capable of making. Spirited Away especially, but other than a few thematic similarities, the vibes are very different. Chomet's films are so far the only ones to have given me a similar feeling to this series. The "Highway Man" scene in particular reminds me of something that would actually fit into one of his movies.

Ha! I've got the same syndrome since few days now... I have also loved most of Sylvain Chomet's work (my favourite is "The Old Lady and the Pigeons").... & Miyazaki's "Spirited Away" - even if they are different in many ways, i cannot disagree on that point!

I would recommend, even if some of the bitter sweet nostalgia from Over The Garden Wall would be missing: The Three Robbers (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448150/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1) based on Tomi Ungerer's book.
It's also not that philosophical or spooky - but the music's really good. That's a good start, right?

A bit late coming to this but here's my contribution anyway. Firstly, I'm also a huge fan of Sylvian Chomet's work. As I haven't seen them mentioned, I will add Mary and Max and The Boxtrolls. I think that you, if you haven't already watched them, will enjoy these movies.

I would definitely suggest Gravity Falls, as that is the show I kept relating it to when describing it... But, also try out Rick and Morty, Adventure Time and possibly Samurai Jack? And even though you said no anime, any Hayao Miyazaki film is a good choice if you are looking for something similar.

I second Samurai Jack. Also, these evoke similar feelings:

1. Secret of the Kells
2. Song of the Sea <------ **** this!
3. Ernest & Celestine
4. Ponyo (anime)
5. The Secret World of Arrietty (anime)

Ok, not cartoons, but I liked the movies The Grand Budapest Hotel and Moonrise Kingdom from Wes Anderson. The movies kind of feel like cartoons because they're a bit zany and weird. They're kind of dark in some ways too but not in the same way as OTGW.

When I watched OTGW, I had the thought "Oh wow, this is special and unique." I was struck by the same thought when I watched The Grand Budapest Hotel. Can't say that they're similar at all beyond a certain feeling, but if you haven't seen it yet, I'd say give it a try.

Adventure Time of-course, by the same producer

Not sure if you still come by or if you've already seen these, but here are a few that I think you might like.

-Watership Down
-Willy The Sparrow
-9
-Grave of the Fireflies (anime)

This show reminded me of "Petit vampire/Little Vampire". It has both french, and english dubbed versions. A bit hard to track down though.

The World of David the Gnome. Childhood favorite. Brings tears to my eyes thinking how innocent life use to be.
