are the French really that morally bankrupt ??

You must have some kind of moral compass when you get to a certain age. It's sad when 60 year olds act like 20 year olds.

I enjoy a lot of Verhoeven's movies but the tone here was way off...we start with a brutal rape/paranoia thriller and wind up with zany family shenanigans featuring characters that dont make a lot of sense
Bit of a misfire imo

She seems awfully friendly with the rapist. I didn't get it at all.

reply

Unrealistic imo though im only a psychiatrist on the internet...

Her son with the cheating fiance with that other guy's kid on her made no sense either

Sometimes i just dont 'get' a movie and just assume its me being dumb and there was some deep message...not this time

The baby was obviously mixed race. Strange movie all round.

It was explained near the end that all the son cared for was showing he could be a good dad. He did not care if he was the genitor or not.

Besides, I Don't think the movie reflects french culture. It was meant to be american but the director didn't think the country would be opened enough (hypocrisy) to make it.

"It was explained near the end that all the son cared for was showing he could be a good dad. He did not care if he was the genitor or not."

Is that why he also lashed out at his mother when she brought it up?

reply

Well to a certain extent he was caring other's opinions too . Obviously he knew that it was not his kid and knew people knew it. But from his perspective having a kid not is own blood/others opinions was still better than no kid at all apparently.

reply

"Well to a certain extent he was caring other's opinions too" - you mean, "caring about" other's opinions? But then, if he did, why did he call his mother the "c" word when she brought the issue up?

reply

Not sure why he should not do it because he cared about other's opinion.

Imo he didn't like to be called out publicly by his mother.

reply

She was luring him in her trap. In all senses of the word.
