Maybe the REAL twist of this movie is..... (HUGE SPOILERS)

...that there never was any rape.

Maybe Michele and Patrick had some sort of understanding that he could come over once in a while to do this rape thing. Because he needed it. And, more shockingly, because Michele enjoyed it.

It would explain the strange reaction of Patrick's wife near the end of the movie where she basically thanks Michele for helping him out for a while. She thanks Michelle because she was glad she herself stopped being the victim of her husband's agressive sexual tendencies and would instead go across the road to get his unusual sexual pleasure.

Which would make it consentual sex.

It also explains Patrick's reaction in the car as Michele says she's going to the police and tell them everything. He has a shocked look on his face and seems to wonder how she could do such a terrible thing.

Now to watch the movie in this light makes it even more disturbing because that would make Patrick 100% victim of murder.

Murdering their neighbours was already a big theme in the movie, right...? ;D

The massacre in the 70's father - daughter collaboration.

This time it's a mother - son collabtoration.

Damn this movie is demented...

My thoughts......

Yes,there was a rape by the neighbour. Why? She has traumatic flashbacks; they show the locksmith changing the locks the next day; she's terrified to enter the house later; talks to her cat about the assault. learns to use the gun. Starts getting lewd texts. When she calls Patrick and his wife over to the house for the dinner, she gets to talk to Patrick alone and there is clearly no evidence that they knew each other earlier (she tells him she is now a grandmother and about her father) and even goes to the doctor to get some check up about any STD she may have picked up from the assault.

Did Patrick's wife know? Yes but it isn't clear to what extent. Maybe she just surmised they were having an affair.

Not necessarily. She just fantasizes about killing him in a violent way. This woman is crazy, remember?

Vicenzo, if Michelle hadn't really been raped the first time, she would never have told her friends about it at dinner.

I understand. If you read the whole thread youd have known I gave up on the theory long ago.... ;D

I did read the whole thread, I just meant there was another reason I disagreed with your theory that no one else had mentioned. BTW, I thought your idea had a lot of merit and a movie like this practically demands thinking outside of the box.

I think Patrick might have TOLD his wife there was a consensual role play thing going on with Michelle, so that was her perception of it. But it was a real rape at least the first time. She legitimately did not know who it was. If that first rape had been consenting and planned by them together, why would she be investigating all the guys at work thinking one of them might be the rapist? She made that guy at work show her his dick, to see if he was the rapist. So she really didn't know who it was.

The second time when she stabbed the rapist's hand and ripped his mask off, that was the first time she knew who it was.
The third time in the basement, she seemed to go down there willingly, and knowing what would likely happen.
The fourth and last time she actively goaded him so that he would be in the act while her son came home.
That was so risky because what if her son got killed fighting Patrick instead of Patrick getting killed? She didn't seem to care.
