Question about the ending... [SPOILERS]
Did she plan to kill him? or did the son show up unexpectedly?
shareDid she plan to kill him? or did the son show up unexpectedly?
shareI think she planned it. Before she leaves the party she tells the son to take the car home. For some reason or another she new he would arrive.
Heath Ledger Come Back,
This isn't funny, at all.
That's exactly the same doubt I had about the movie. I personally didn't like this ending. I wished they kept on having that perverted relationship. Despire this, great movie and character study, indeed.
shareNo way to know for sure, but I don't think she planned it. She had absolutely no way of knowing when Vincent would come home, but common sense says he would have stayed until the party died down, which would have been a while. Not to mention she couldn't know for sure Patrick would attack her again right at that moment. Yes, she seemed to bait him but if he had waited even 5 minutes, Vincent would have arrived first. Too much left for chance. Plus, what would her motive have been? She could have shot him in self-defense herself and no one would have questioned it.
I guess it's really just subjective.
I personally think the son had no idea what was going on. (He was clueless, period.) I think the final death wasn't meant to happen.
shareI think she was setting him up for a trap that she wasn't sure was going to work. It was a shot in the dark really.
shareI think a better question is, was he ready to kill her?
Maybe she would have really gone to the police, maybe it was a way to set up another role-play event, but I think if the son didn't come home unexpectedly, he would have killed her to avoid any risk (a decision I think he would be 100% sure about only after last the attack started). Still, not sure how to interpret that last "Why?", maybe it was a, "Why did you decide to stop what we were doing and talk about going to the police".
But then the son go into it and she had to edit the story for the police, to make sure her already wishy-washy son wouldn't have trouble.
Yes, I think she was setting him up too. Of course, she couldn't know for sure her son would turn up, and maybe she didn't care either way. She was pretty reckless.
shareI think she planned the whole thing, but the son was not in on the planning. He was a manipulated participant. It was a risky plan, because what if he took a pit stop to get gas or something on the way home? if he had showed up a few minutes later it would have been too late.
