I guess i am a very evil person then for hating so many movies over the years and feeling content reading bad reviews that i wasn't the only one who though that way about a particular movie.

reply

Come on guys, talking smack about a movie that fails because the director is too far up her own butt is fun, stop trying to take that away from us!

I approve of this comment. This comment has made my day. Thank you.

These negative comments being content with people who have failed at some point makes me happy that I'm not a douche or a loser. So you've made my day, thanks.

Quite right. The correct word is "and", not "or". You're not one or the other, you're clearly both.

reply

Im not a fan of Jolie, but she really is a competent director. This film is beautifully made, and "In the Land of Blood and Honey" is an excellent film. Her directing style is very European, which is probably why most American audiences don't appreciate her directing work.

lol!!! this!!

reply

me to...just an exercise in pretentiousness and is proof of Angelina's overly inflated opinion of her true artistic abilities. However, SNL should have a field day with this...the trailer already feels like a perfume ad from the 90s..Taran Killam and Kate McKinnon will be much more entertaining to watch.

LOL !! You reminded me of Brad Pitt's Chanel ads … when I first saw them I was overseas where Clooney's Nespresso ads were being played all the time (the ones with John Malkovich) and they were so funny, so upon first seeing the Chanel ad I was sure it was a total spoof as it was so ridiculous .. but NO .. not comedy .. sooooo awkward … like the McConaughey car commercials … painful !!!

reply

You do realize that the Matthew McConaughey Lincoln commercials are supposed to be ...ridiculous and over the top, right?

And it's not like commercials are proof that Brad Pitt or Jolie doesn't have any talent. They're just so famous, especially in other countries, that they get paid millions of dollars for literal minutes of their time. A lot of American movie stars do foreign commercials because of this. They don't want them ruining their image in America, but they also want to get paid lots of money.

In fact they are not supposed to be that at all - the link below is what a spoof of this ad looks like.

As well I am not quite sure why you inferred that I thought Pitt or Jolie were no talents, nor why you assumed I needed to be "educated" on foreign advertising by American actors and actresses. Having worked extensively overseas I've seen Pitt's japanese ads, Clooney's French ads, in fact I was working in Hong Kong when the Chanel ads came out. I am well aware that they do so for mega-bucks without fearing they will ever be aired in the US.

Perhaps you should save your wisdom for those who actually request the benefit of it. And to be clear, that is not me. Have a good day.

reply

I'm sorry you took such offense but you clearly didn't get the humor, since you said you only felt awkwardness. You realize in one of the commercials he's just talking to a bull, right?

It's funny..
And maybe you should watch an interview or something with Matthew talking about them.

That's called "rolling with it".

PS - I'm talking about the Lincoln ads only - the ones in the car.

reply

I'm aware of what ads you're talking about. There's an ad with McConaughey in the lincoln...just talking to a bull ..while they're both having a staring contest.

It may be what some call 'dark humor' but it's still not 100 percent serious. And I don't think anyone involved in the making of that thought so.

Your "opinion" is informed by your "opinion" rather than any facts. See below - as well you can google this ad-nauseum - many marketing people and such speak to these ads, the original ones and their evolution over time based on the reception.

In the end though we all "believe" what we want to. And on that note, I'm done. Have a nice day.

reply

Why do they look so poor? Aren't they suppose to have money. They both look miserable. Why make a movie when they obviously are ill or very unhappy?

Just watch it.

My review:

Director: Antonioni "wanna be" Jolie

Not a good film

From High Def Digest review:

"Make no mistake, the only reason that this movie has received a studio release (even on a modest scale) is because a famous movie star duo are involved. Otherwise, it’s unlikely this thing ever would have seen the light of day. The movie is a deeply self-indulgent exercise from a star just famous and successful enough to turn self-satisfied navel gazing into a studio release.

Three films into her directorial career, it’s still difficult to determine what to make of Angelina Jolie. She clearly knows where to put a camera and how to mount a production. However, all of her films thus far have been imitations of previous styles of cinema executed with precision, but also a coldly impersonal detachment that prevents any emotional connection. They feel like filmmaking assignments from a student who somehow talked a studio into backing her school projects. There’s clearly directorial talent here, but anything resembling an artist’s voice in lost behind mimicry. It’s possible that Jolie will eventually mature into an artist or storyteller behind the camera, but for now she’s merely an expert student. The fact that her fame earned these projects such high profile releases is more irritating than exciting"

Agree 100%

Nicely written review! Thanks! I might watch it on DVD.

What I don't get, is why if Jolie is serious about directing, she doesn't do it under a pseudonym? If you're really famous like she is, you won't really know the genuine reaction to your work - whether people are going to see it and praising it, funding it, just because of your name, or whether reviewers are trashing it because you're just a Hollywood 'star' with self-indulgent pretensions and they were never going to approach your films with anything other than scorn.

If I was Jolie and was serious about it, I would have directed under a different name. Kind of like George Eliot pretended she was a man so people wouldn't have preconceived notions about her books.

So far watching this film I don't like it very much but don't know enough about directing to give a critique or anything.

From High Def Digest review:

Yeah because High Def Digest is such a credible source of objective reviews, it's known the world over.

I didn't really like the movie but any "reviewer" who attacks the director personally every 3 lines is about as credible a reviewer as the OP or any other imdb troll

"Yeah because High Def Digest is such a credible source of objective reviews, it's known the world over."

LOL!

When a child is unhappy with the truth, they attack the source.

I don't care if that review was from Gay Porn Star Weekly, High Times, or a NAMBLA newsletter, it was spot-on. Just because you didn't like it, doesn't make it any less true.

I just watched the trailer....I hope someone re-cuts it as a comedy

~I see a little silhouette of a man, Scaramouche, Scaramouche, will you do the Fandango.

reply

Omw! How pathetic are you people!? Go get a life! Dont you have anything better to do than sitting around trolling on celebs and their movies?! Dis Angelina Jolie or Brad Pitt personally offend you in some way? Or were you just bord bitter?!

Im sure Angelina and Brad will be crying themselves to sleep tonight coz you burned their movie. Boohoo!!!

reply

Wow, how pathetic is it to call yourself angelina-frigging-jolie on a movie website, lol? You need to get a grip and accept tht Jolie’s movie looks like it’s going to sweep the boards at the next Razzies!

"Or were you just bord bitter?!"

By the way, what on Earth does that, in quotes, mean?

reply

Ooohhh you really burning me now! That really hurt. I made a spelling error and you're making fun if me :( Grow up and get a life you stupid troll!!! I don't give a flying f#ck if this movie wins 100 razzies. Your opinion doesnt matter. Wont change my mind or how i see these actors or this movie. Critics opinions doesnt matter. Who died and made them maters of the universe?! Its all a matter of opinion. I'm not the 'bitter and bored'loser getting my kicks from other people's bad luck. You really must have a really sad and small life.

reply

Not just a spelling error but grammatically incorrect, you illiterate clod!

reply

LOL!!!!!!

You really hit a nerve! That celebrity-lovin-lemming not only edited his post to fix his 3rd grade grammar, but then changed his screenname too! What a lovely unintentional admission of ignorance and typical sheeple consumer conformity. Smoke that pole, son!

Well done!

reply

maybe we just don't like the movie? I find watching either one of these 2 actors very difficult. It's like they can see the camera and want to show us how hot/good they are instead of just getting down to acting.
Does that mean I don't have a life? No. It means I haven't fallen for the Hollywood hype that keeps trying to convince me that these 2 people are a 'power couple. No they are NOT. They are mediocre actors, that's all - JUST actors. Not cancer curers, just actors.

reply

^ Haha I agree. I want to like Brad Pitt though, and I think he's had his moments, but not many good ones in a while...

reply

You don't know what you are talking about. Brad Pitt is a great actor, whether you like it or not. "12 Monkeys", "Fight Club", "Snatch", "Jesse James", "Tree Of Life", "Moneyball" and many others prove that. It's not even up for debate, because his work has been praised by critics and loved by the audience. You are just an ignorant hater.

Now, about Jolie's directing, this is true mediocrity. As an actor, she's had some decent performances, hence I would not say she's a mediocre actor either.

reply

I agree that Brad Pitt has had his moments. He as brilliant even in True Romance but I didn't think his acting was good in Oceans 11 and to me he has been off the boil since then.
And I can debate whatever I want!

reply

Ocean's 11 was a popcorn movie and he was effective in what he was intructed to do. I agree that the character wasn't deep and the role was far from demanding, but I guess you should rather blame the director and the movie concept for this. He's had great moments since then, in quality films like Jesse James, Moneyball and Tree Of Life (Babel and Burn After Reading come up to mind too). As long as he stays out of collaborations with his wife (we saw the results in By The Sea) he'll be fine. He is doing some pretty interesting stuff atm, coming up next year, plus his other film, The Big Short, is getting good reviews. We'll see.

reply

Oh yes, he was great in Burn After Reading. I don't get all the excitement about him though. I don't believe he is one of Hollywood's best actors. Actually, to me he looks a little dumb - maybe he isn't but he has that slightly vacant look. Anyway, besides all that, this movie is not my style and will be avoided.

reply

Pitt is a good actor ("Ocean's Eleven", "Seven", "Interview with the Vampire", "Fury", "Moneyball", "The Treee of Life") who has made some punctual brilliant performances in which he fits perfectly into his characters ("Fight Club", "Benjamin Button", "Inglorious Basterds", "Burn After Reading" ).

But he's a not an always charismatic and superb actor, he's not always brilliant, he can't save a bad script ("Meet Joe Black", "Troy", "Seven Years in Tibet"), he's not Streep nor Pacino nor a Daniel Day-Lewis.

reply

The thought that anyone posting on the IMDB boards would ever think their comment would be read by the stars whatever they are commenting on, no less Angelina or Brad Pitt, is completely ludicrous. So to say we are trolling stars by acknowledging how bad the film was and how badly it failed is complete ignorance on your dragon born part.

If you are truly Dragon Born I really expected a lot more from you.

Related sidenote: this movie was only released by Universal so she would star in one of their upcoming (hopeful) blockbusters
