That writer needs to lay off the sauce...some of those suggestions are just silly and laughable.

reply

Only some are silly? ;) I would say most. I'm seeing either qualified people that would, in a million years, never take the job or others that would take the job, but are either unqualified, or lack mass appeal.

While cable has lured quite a few viewers away from the big networks, late night big network talk shows are still very big business. You can't bet millions of dollars on an unknown or someone with a niche audience. Whoever they choose has to bring viewers with them- and of the people on the list who would accept the job, no one has a substantial present audience.

Before anyone knew the 'real' Stephen, he was actually a pretty solid choice. He had a very formidable cadre of impassioned 18-34 olds at his beckon call, and Les thought he could merge Stephen's kids with CBS's gray hairs for ratings gold, but Stephen's spineless, watered down show ended up alienating everybody.

I really have no idea where Les is going from here, but I can guarantee you that it won't involve anyone on that list.

Some good choices here. I would say the ultra-competitive move would be for les moonves to poach Seth Meyers from NBC if they want to keep the Late Show in NY. They could go with Corden if they move to LA.
NPH would be a good choice cuz he is good with skits and light comedy.
Chelsea should have gotten the show, but she is probably too controversial with the sex talk. Chris Rock would be good but he used to have a show on HBO.

At this point, and it honestly pains me to say this because I've been such a huge fan for so long, I'm almost in favor of:

32. Anyone but Stephen.

reply

33.. Nobody at all.
I propose the next innovation:. "Headless Late Night", a nightly guest-driven semi-improv event.
There's no host per se, but segments can be pseudo-hosted by elected celebrity guests.. Scripted and rehearsed material provides structure, but the show's lifeblood relies on a lively atmosphere of informal improvisation.. The show innovates while engaging with audiences young and old.. Ratings shoot through the roof, and late night TV is never the same again.. Okay it's a dumb idea and I may or may not be sober.

If Moonves were really smart, he'd go in another direction entirely. And I'm not talking about something along the lines of Jay's attempt at an earlier time slot. I'm talking about a revolution in Late Night, a la early Letterman. The idea of a single host, doing a monologue, interviewing guests every night- that can all change. How about a different host each night of the week? JGL hosts one night, Justin Timberlake the next, Jane Lynch after that. Instead of the host interviewing the guest celebrities, you have the celebrities interviewing each other. It would be like the SNL host, except, rather than having a different host weekly, you'd do it daily. You have all the musicians that are in NY that night have an hour long jam session. If they want millenials, if they're going to survive, they have to push the envelope.

When I said this back in May, I was called 'beyond naive.' FWIW, I was sober then and now :)

Stacey Dash?
Trump? (after he loses in November)
Kendall Jenner?

Be careful what you wish for.

reply

i watch the show solely because of Stephen.

i couldn't care less about late night tv without him.

Scott Aukerman makes fun of this very style of show with Comedy Bang Bang. I know he's not a well-known, mainstream comedian, but it worked for Conan. Scott just might appeal to millennials (he has my vote). And I think CBS needs someone who knows the format, but mocks it as well to give things a fresh perspective. But then again, CBS might squelch Scott too just like they did with Colbert. Never mind. Forget I said any of this.

the fake Stephen from the Colbert Report.

or maybe this one is the fake

reply

I think that ship has sailed.

As much as I enjoyed seeing Stephen perform the old character during the convention (and the freakish bump in ratings it gave him), it just wasn't the same. Honestly, it kind of reeks of desperation. "Hey guys, you didn't/don't like the real me, so, hey, I'll go back to being the fake me. It'll be like those old times where you adored me. Love me again, please love me."

At least, that's how I see it :)

It's not going to happen, but I think Stephen's best course of action is some time away from the camera. It's going to take some time to shed the stink of this failure. I haven't completely resonated with the comments here pointing towards his lack of humility being the root cause of the problem, but, at the same time, I think he could benefit from some introspection- if that's possible.

He'll most likely get other offers, like he did with the Mindy Project last year, and they'll most likely suck just as much as his Mindy Project performance did, so I don't seem him taking a hiatus, but I think it would help.

If I were his agent, I suggest a book delving into his regret over leaving the report. How he didn't know how good he had it until it was gone. He should use this failure to reinvent himself.

I enjoy watching Stephen show. I like his format it reminds me of The Late show with Craig Kilborn.

Seth Meyers Late Night show sucks. He needs to stop doing that sketch with Fred all the time.

Katie Couric, really what can she bring to late night? Her day time talk show didn't last long. Some of those choices are very laughable.

James Cordon is pretty much a copy of Jimmy Fallon no one is going to watch him over Fallon and Kimmel.

The Tonight Show has always been a power house for years.

They forgot Chevy Chase. :P
