Edith Pretty

Edith Pretty was in her mid-late fifties when the events of this film occurred. While I like Carey Mulligan, and I appreciate that the filmmakers took a large amount of artistic licence with the story, I found this rather distracting. Why could they not have cast an age-appropriate actress? Pretty was actually a little older than Ralph Fiennes’ character, whereas in the film he seemed more like an uncle to her.

Women over 50 cease being relevant in our youth obsessed Western society.

reply

Other than historical accuracy, is this really a big deal? Did it downgrade the film?

reply

Interesting... Who would you have cast?

reply

I am surprised Mulligan was only thirty-four when the movie was made. She could easily pass for ten years older.

reply

Agreed. 34? That's crazy. I definitely thought she was older.

I hope makeup was in play.

reply

I wasn't bothered my that so much as the artistic license with the Piggott's marriage.

reply

Initially Nicole Kidman (53 at the time) was cast in the part but she left the project. Carey Mulligan was then selected. She might not be old enough, but she certainly has chops enough for the acting.
