I had to turn this off last night 40 minutes into episode 2. So far totally boring, nothing interesting whatsoever except this pope is an oddball and so far totally unorthodox and not realistic at all. I love Jude Law and really trying to get into this but so far what I have seen is awful.
When does this pick up? It is going to take some effort to turn this back on again.
I found it very slow as well, but I soldiered on until at last it ended. I'm planning a rewatch tomorrow, and I am trying so hard to get into it, but it's difficult, and frankly rather frustrating.
I want so much to enjoy it, but it's a tough sell.
"Stick with me, baby, and you'll be fartin' thru silk."
I admit that I thought it was a little slow for a first episode but I think it is because since the Vatican and its inhabitants need to be set up for the series to make sense. it is basically setting up the plot of the series by allowing the viewer to get to know a few of the basic players are and what their roles will be in relation to the young pope. if you are not catholic or haven't had any information on how the hierarchy of the church runs then it can be confusing and boring. as a 'recovering catholic' (meaning that I left the church after Vatican II) I understand more than a person who has not had any information on how the church runs. at the upper levels it is all very political - not to say that the men and women in the church are not without their faith. but, it is undeniable that many clergy would like to become a monsignor, cardinal, etc.. and, therefore, there are little power struggles. also, the beginning of the series is allowing you to see the relationship of how a pope prior to lenny would be addressed and 'handled' and how lenny plans to be his 'own' pope. so, I am sticking it out for second episode and then I will see if I want to continue watching. personally, I would like to hear some feedback from the church on how they are receiving this series but I haven't heard anything from them in any form of media.
It is so different from anything on HBO ever, so there's that.
I am older and grew up Catholic, and I am right now intrigued by the idea of a young pope, and the drama of an unstable person being Pope, which is the highest position of exaltation in the world really! He is infallible! Can't get much better than that!
If I were in a space in life where I didn't care about that Church-y stuff, I wouldn't even try watching it.
Doesn't hurt that Jude Law has the character nailed.
The Young Pope is a story of power.... He briefly defines what he means as a "young pope" and how popes were controlled in a historical context in Episode 5. I am an atheist and am completely transfixed. Certainly a unique show. My 88-year-old mother walks out when I try to catch up On Demand when she falls asleep in the evening. She is not Catholic or religious though affiliates loosely as Presbyterian. I don't think she is offended, though I have not asked her. I presume she is bored, and in an instantaneous sense. She votes with her feet. Lifetime or Hallmark movie this is not!
I would say the two things I have studied, formally and informally, that form my perspective on this series is world history and political science, and in literature, stories of power, followed by a fall. If these bore you, then the series will bore you.
It is funny how my mind too went to Donald Trump with many of lines spoken in the first episode. And yes, I did read in another thread how long ago this series was in production. However, both men are the "most powerful" and share some traits, so a film on power-wielding can speak generally. How Lenny and Trump use their power is very different.
How Lenny and Trump use their power is very different.
Quite true. First off, Lenny is educated and intelligent. He informs himself and doesn't need a fact checker to always be on hand. He is not motivated by greed nor fame. His convictions are a little bizarre and unconventional but not intentionally destructive. The age differences between Lenny and Trump show one man as learning about leadership and another who is old enough to know better what true leadership should be. Just MPOV.
Trump is a disaster. Pius XIII may have potential.
