so what was even the point of the whole story line with the sister?

I feel that it was not well done, and ultimately served no purpose.

Well there's going to be a Season 2, so I have a funny feeling either it's going to turn out she isn't dead, or she's going to be 'haunting' him or helping him as a spirit. Also, if she is dead, Delaney may feel so guilty that he may become . totally reckless and end the season going out in a blast and then being reunited with Zilpha in the afterlife. Trust me, there is a purpose to the sister's story line....at least in the long run.

reply

Yeah, have the same ugly feeling. I really hope that she only returns as a ghost in his visions, kinda like the mum in the first season. Most likely it will turn out she is not dead after all I fear.

reply

Ghost or alive and kicking, she'll still be pretty annoying! Ha!

The show runners are planning a 3 season series. Zilpha isn't dead I surmise she got fished out. James is still in love with her he just pushed her away to keep her safe from the East India Company. They can't call the show Taboo and then have nothing Taboo about it.

reply

Could argue that all the voodoo stuff James is doing is taboo enough. I hope that is the case at least.

reply

Except he could hear her singing in the water like the other that ghosts sang to him.
So, from my perspective she is most definitely dead.

and the only one that couldn't act...

Horrible bad chemistry with Hardy's character was the worst of it. But ye, not very likely too see any awards coming her way for that acting.

reply

yes im sorry but that was ridiculous... i don't like to talk bad about anybody but such an extremely talented cast and her... its like a 6 year old playing tennis against roger federer... ah well , forget about it, i finished it today and i am still impressed about how good it was

reply

Yes, I'm so glad to find that it wasn't just me and that others thought her acting was pretty poor compared to her costars. I guess they got her because she's the grand daughter of Charlie Chaplin. And because she looks a bit 'exotic', erm, with her dark hair and eyes. They say she's quite nice to work with, so maybe that helped her in landing the role too.

reply

Liked her in Game of Thrones, where she did a decent job. But the role there fitted her much better, and the chemistry with Richard Madden (Robb Stark) was good.

reply

Yes I do think she had more chemistry with Madden, though the script did facilitate that because of the romantic nature of their characters' storyline .

Her performance in Taboo was too similar to the one she did in GoT for my liking.

Looking over this thread I couldn't remember who the sister was, but checking the cast it must be the Oona Chaplin character, as she was on Game Of Thrones. I was really annoyed Taboo never continued, I liked the show quite a bit. I think this was the first thing I saw Jessie Buckley in, and was impressed with her.

reply

Just here to present a different side of the argument. I personally thought she served her part extremely well, it was the character that was odd and disturbing (in a good way).

And the tension with James I felt was extremely well executed. This was no ordinary relationship so it can not be judged by ordinary standards. Regular concept of 'chemistry' does not apply here.

(And if you are actually talking about the actors, I saw no lack of chemistry at all. But that was me, and I enjoyed her character greatly).

reply

I agree. She was also very good in The Crimson Field— another series that was cut short and never got to complete its intended run.

reply

Yup, it did not. This is what happens when terribly written character meets terrible acting.

reply

Now that the show has been released on Netflix I’m doing a rewatch. I actually didn’t mind her storyline, but I got to thinking – – if her character were completely cut from the show it would make no difference at all to the story.

reply

Exactly.

I guess it's only to add to his character as this dark, incestuous individual who created this empire.
