Why leave the clues?

Im dont really buy the premise, why would someone leave such elaborate clues and then be surprised when he tracks her down - why leave the clues if not a test of his dedication? Its like making someone do a residency and when they get through it, the board is like "lol, jk, we went through all this trouble trainging you as a goof"

She wasn't testing his dedication - she intended to start her life in NY without anyone.

The first clue - was the picture of Woody Guthrie on the back of her window shade. He made the comment that she never had her shade down before - so we don't know if the picture had always been there or not.

The only direct clue that was left for him, was the message in the hinge of his bedroom door.

The point of him finding her was to change his perspective (when they were in the Sun Building he said he would be happy at 30 after finishing school, getting a job, marrying and starting a family). The night of HER revenge changes all that - it lights the spark in him. Up until then, he hadn't even attended a real party in high school. It was what he had to do, not what she wanted him to do.

However, the fact that he did track her down, does prove that he is a worthy friend, and why she asks him to stay before he gets on the bus back home.

He does go back home to finish the track that he was on,but now with a different perspective to value every day along the path to his happiness instead of thinking that happiness is just a goal at the end of the trail.

I like your interpretation

I think in the end, Margo did appreciate what Q did..i mean hey, only Q did it right?even Margo look surprised when Q finally found her

I thought they would hook up, or go to the prom, but no, the ending wasnt that happy

And i like the character growth for Q, i think his final word are sums it up

It was in her nature to be mysterious and to give hints about herself like the locations she was at. I think she did want him to know she was not in trouble like others here have wrote.

I don't buy it either -- I don't know about the book, but in the movie she even claimed she did NOT deliberately leaves clues, if I'm not mistaken.

I'm sure I heard her say that when he found her and told her he'd found the clues, she said "what clues" or something similar.

I enjoyed this movie for the road-trip/camaraderie/last night of high school/American Graffiti thing and even a little bit of a "Virgin Suicides" thing it had going on, but yeah there's stuff that's annoying and doesn't make any sense.
