Is Zendaya too old to begin a Disney show?

Sure there was Good Luck Charlie and Jessie, but both of those shows were also anchored with younger kids who usually drove the stories.

But with this... Zendaya is going to be 19 this year and the show centers entirely around her. I don't think she's going to become the next Miley Cyrus as far as her behavior but she is a pop singer who also wants to apparently branch away from Disny with her billboard singles. And that's going to be hard To juggle while on Disney. Basically this could lead to a Sam and Cat fiasco. Centering a kids show around 20 year old adults was a plan that ultimately got Nick burned pretty badly and in response, all of their new shows star 10-13 year olds.

I'm saying basically that this show could lead to Disney's very own Ariana Grande fiasco. The show gets canned after just a few months because the star is an adult who is having success outside of the network. I guess this show will have no problem as long as Zendaya has no success outside of Disney lol

Somewhat agree. I like the concept of the show but Zendaya has started her adulthood. Having her play a teen character when she is likely having a grown up career with her success outside of Disney could lead to some life not imitating art conflicts. This is usually the age when Disney stars begin to grow up and lead more adult lives, and it usually causes some conflict for the star when their character is a still a goofy teen while their real lives are far from it. Disney stars are often expected to portray a pristine image, and I wonder whether it's a good thing, considering the pressure and expectations, to have them play teens when their lives are far from it.

Exactly! This is exactly what I'm talking about.

Zendaya is talented, her music is pretty good, and the things she does outside of Disney has sex appeal to it... Just like Ariana Grande. (Also remember when those lingerie pics of Jennette McCurdy were released).

Zendaya isn't like Debby Ryan- a square who steps on egg shells to never disappoint the Disney bosses. Or even think of Mitchell Musso. He was on Pair of Kings as a young adult after Hannah Montana, and a little while later he was fired because he was drunk driving.

the thing is though that she doesn't look that age....

I sure wouldn't look at her and say she's almost not a teen anymore....

and if you think about it...when Charlie was on...teddy and pj were too old for their parts as were too old.....it wasn't really about Charlie it was about pj and teddy...and the parents...

yes, jake was a pre-and then a teen..but other then that

I hadn't actually thought about it, but now that I do, yeah... Zendaya is definitely playing younger than she really is. IRL she is almost 19 but in this show she is still in public school.

Let's not forget Jackson from Hannah Montana. He was in his 30s and playing a teenager for the entirety of the series. While it's pretty obvious by now that Bella's going to be the next miley, that doesn't mean Zendaya has to follow suit. They're separate people.

No, it really isn't. I don't see how anything she has done has been comparable to Miley's antics.

I disagree. She's behaving very similarly, she's just not being as extreme about it. And I'm not trying to say that there's anything wrong with Bella turning out like Miley. It's her life and she can do what she wants. i'm just giving my observations after seeing the videos Bella's posted on her social media since SIU ended, which have often been rather raunchy/racy for someone who still has so many young fans.

I never said that. All I'm saying is that Bella started pushing the boundaries of the squeaky-clean Disney starlet image noticeably faster than some others from the wave SIU was in. Considering how small and rigid that mold is, it doesn't take a lot to break it. I never said she was going to become Miley's exact clone or that she wasn't her own person.

How old was Raven when she started Disney channel? Yeah I think she started in her 20s. So zendaya being 18 isn't that old.

Raven was 17 when TSR premiered. Zendayas age is perfectly fine. And let us not forget, Ashley Tisdale was 19/20 when "The Suite Life" premiered.

Ashley wasn't the LEAD of The Suite Life though, so that doesn't count. The topic here is a LEAD being too old to have their own show and there's no child to help drive their stories.

She just turned 18 in September and she can pass for a 15-16 year old. I see no problem here.

Actually she's stated in interviews that she is in no hurry to get away from Disney anytime soon.

Sixteen.

I think she can pass for it, the only problem is she's so tall. And that's not a serious issue, my sisters sixteen and she's about the same height.

Bella is making the same mistake other former Disney stars did and that is they are trying to be looked at as "adults" by doing sexy/racy things when professional (adult) actors just work.

That's the thing they don't understand.

There are a lot of former Disney stars who are doing all right and what they did to gain the respect of the business was to just do what everybody else does: Let the work speak for itself.

Of course, that's the difference between being a teenager and older...
