Why not update for the modern world?

Drug dealing, shootings, murders, teen pregnancy, armed robberies, abuse of women, lack of positive male role models.
This story was a fantasy in the 50's and 60's. Today it is just ridiculous.
I cannot fathom why anyone would be interested.

Not really. The dark side of Washington Heights is mostly absent from that depiction.
