Does anyone else dislike Jane?

I'm in the process of watching the show for the first time on Netflix. I'm currently on episode fifteen of the first season and I just can't help but be annoyed by Jane all the time. I find her really selfish. And I know that her whole character is supposed to be the complete opposite... Or is it? I don't know. She's just my least favorite character. Favorites right now would be Petra and Xo.

Just wondering what everyone's opinions are if you guys are all caught up. Does Jane change any?

She actually gets worse in S2

I really enjoy watching this show. But Jane annoys the crap out of me. Her arrogance, selfishness and how the actress apparently thinks she is a role model for latina women through "Jane" makes me wanna cry and laugh in disbelief.

reply

Yeah, Gina is a tad self-serious and holier than thou in interviews. Maybe the GG win went to her head.

reply

Yes I even stopped watching bc her character is so insufferable and too sanctimonious for my tastes.

I'm getting to the point that I'm going to stop watching myself. She doesn't really care about Michael or Rafael - only what they can give her and if they'll do her bidding. Definitely selfish and manipulative, an undercover con artist. Everyone puts her on a pedestal and she needs to be slapped.

reply

Yeah, don't like her. She's too holier than thou.

Pretty much every female character is better than her.

I find it interesting that you consider selfishness to be an annoying trait in a character, yet you claim to like Petra, who consistently displays behavior that is quintessentially selfish. And Xo, though inherently a good person, also has a track record of being selfish. If anything, I always thought Jane was almost annoying because she was so selfless and always does the right thing.
You're well within your right to dislike characters, I just was a little confused by your reasoning.

Petra's supposed to be selfish. We're supposed to admire Jane.

There was only one streak where I personally found Jane off-putting, and IMO it was the writing. It was when she was constantly overriding Petra and telling Petra her way was better for Rafael. It's not her attitude so much as how it played. It was holier than thou, and incredibly condescending. It all culminated with a HUGE miss when Petra/Jane had a joint mother's day get together, and Rogelio had the hideously bad manners to show his movie celebrating Jane's perfection, which included testimonials from Rafael, who is the father of Petra's twins. Rudest thing EVER.

I put that down to the writing. It was a bad story sequence for the show. They had made Petra and Jane friends, but wanted to show there was still conflict, and they way they chose was a hideous misfire and made all of the Villenuevas look bad. Plus I don't think Jane would be that busybody and critical of Petra's ideas for Rafael managing his brother. When they moved on from that sequence and onto the Michael/Jane wedding AND onto the S3 premiere, I have had no problem with Jane.

After watching My Crazy Ex Girlfriend Jane is a breath of fresh air. No one can be as self serving as that character. Jane can get somewhat annoying at times but she has a good heart and her intentions are always good.

I find her really selfish.

Jane is my favorite character and one of my all-time favorite females BUT I'm inclined to a agree with you. The more I think about it in a given episode, the more it bothers me. I find that (it's not always her fault), people are usually having to compromise in her favor and she rarely "gives". I've seen it a lot in her relationship to Michael, especially.

If she were played by any other actress, I'd probably really hate her and the unintentional selfish thing would get on my nerves. But Rodriguez hits it out of the park and makes her character so lovable.

My bigger issue is that Jane's flaw isn't really addressed on the show. Her other flaws, like her judgemental or control-freak issues, are often given a discussion, which is why I can forgive them bc we're all flawed. But the fact that she is quite often selfish, is never broached and she's never actually called out on it or made self-aware. People just assume that Jane should have the final say bc it's Jane.
A rose is just a rose.
