You can only joke about the most powerful things in their category, so yes, it'd be less acceptable if they said anything else in there.

I'm a christian and I didn't feel personally attacked.

I didn't at all feel like the movie was poking fun at christians as much as it was the characters making fun of christians. As viewers, we see flaws in Ben (Exemplified by his daughter falling off of the roof and stealing from the grocery store). He does a lot right but does a lot wrong too. He isn't a perfect person who is ALWAYS right. He's also not ALWAYS wrong.

It made total sense to me that he would see the bible as a fairy tale based on what we know about his and his wife's pasts. The two of them probably felt oppressed by certain christians they knew, like her parents. Let's not be totally oblivious and admit that there are some christians, definitely not all, but still some who are judgmental and look down on people who believe differently than them.

So yes, Ben and his family do make fun of christians, but the movie itself doesn't seem to say anything either way on it.

Also, I haven't read any responses here because any time God or christianity are brought up in a comment section/message board, things get pretty ugly. But, please people, try to approach stuff like this with some understanding and not get so personally attacked by things that disagree with you. also, don't attack because you disagree with someone. It makes everyone look childish.

Of course not OP. You see everybody is allowed to criticise Christianity but when they cop some back you are racist, homophobe, entitled......etc

The SJW's would not go anywhere near Muslims or Jews because the blow back would ruin the film. But hey it's open season on Christians right!!!!

Hypocrites

As other posters state, viewing the world view of the characters, it was an appropriate statement for their characters to make. They consider themselves to be thoughtful and willing to consider all world views. Christians are "the man" in the US when it comes to religion. All other religions in the US take a back seat by a large margin AND many christian leaders both in government (think Huckabee, Santorum) and entertainment (think TV preachers) often preach both subtly and non-subtly against other religions. I don't think they really mean ALL Christians in their statement, but only the hypocritacal leaders of organized Christianity.

To answer if it was OK to insert another religion. It's the wrong question, the question would be "Would it make sense to insert another religion given the characters?"

I was (and am, for that matter) upset to hear that IMDB is shutting down these comment threats.

But reading the nasty comments here, from both sides of the argument, make me more aware of why they are doing that.

There was a time where these comment threads were more civil, and discussed films in a more rational way, even when people disagreed about some points. Those days are long gone.
