Jessica is the type of character that makes or breaks any series. She can be hilarious, but it also comes across as mean. Jessica is the most difficult type of character to write in any comedy series because there's a fine line between condescendingly funny, and total bitch. The writing room hasn't yet figured out how to consistently avoid crossing the line. Compare the comedy styles between Veronica (Better Off Ted) and Amy (Superstore) and you'll know what I mean.
At first I think she was a home run, but her iciness got to be so despicable it was very hard to watch her. I enjoyed her in the beginning, but her over-protectiveness and controlling nature are too over the top, so I can only take her in small doses. I'd imagine Constance Wu's contract stipulates she gets more on screen time than the other actors.
In general this show suffers from one-dimensional characters. The series is so established now that we understand their behavior patterns, so it's nearly impossible to create more depth because it isn't believable. Even by the Season 2 Premiere (the summer vacation episode), it was not at all believable when she tried to apologize for ruining the vacation. Whenever she tries to use emotion, it's totally cringeworthy because it's so forced. It's as though the writing room abruptly decides to stop her rampage and teach her a lesson. In real life, I don't know how or why anybody would be friends with her.
I don't think she ruins the show. She's just not very likable.
